We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Thursday, June 18, is 87 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 87 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1987 season for the Cardinals.
1987 was the Cardinals' final season in St. Louis. hey went 7-8 and won four of their final six games. They had a top-10 offense with Neil Lomax at quarterback, averaging 24.1 points per game, which was seventh in the league. They were 23rd in scoring defense, though, giving up 23.8 per game.
Lomax led the NFL in passing yards and made the Pro Bowl. Receiver JT Smith was a second-team All-Pro, leading the league in receptions and receiving yards. Fullback Ron Wolfley was a Pro Bowler and returner Vai Sikahema was both a Pro Bowler and a first-team All-Pro. Sikahema led the NFL in punt return yards and scored a touchdown.
Lomax led the NFL in passing attempts, completions and passing yards (3,387) and threw 24 touchdown passes to 12 12 interceptions.
Smith's 91 catches for 1,117 yards led the NFL as well, and he scored eight touchdowns.
Stump Mitchell rushed for 781 yards and three scores, averaging 3.8 yards per attempt. Earl Ferrell scored eight rushing touchdowns, gaining 512 yards on 4.5 yards per carry.
Lonnie Young led the team with 87 tackles, and Freddie Joe Nunn's 11 sacks led the team.
Safety Travis Curtis led with five interceptions as a rookie.
