We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Wednesday, June 24, is 81 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 81 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1981 season for the Cardinals.
The 1981 season was quarterback Neil Lomax's rookie season. He took over late in the season and, when he did, the Cardinals won four games in a row. However, they lost the final two games to finish 7-9.
Jim Hart led the team in passing, completing 55.6% of his passes for 1,694 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Lomax completed 50.4% of his passes for 1,575 yards, four touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Ottis Anderson rushed for 1,376 yards and nine touchdowns. That rushing total is second in franchise history, behind only his rookie season in 1979.
Pat Tilley was their top receiver with 66 catches for 1,040 yards and three touchdowns.
Stump Mitchell had a punt return for a touchdown and led the NFL in kickoff return yardage.
Sacks were not yet an official stat, but Pro Football Reference credits Curtis Greer with 12.5 sacks that season to lead the team.
Safety Ken Greene had seven interceptions, and Hall of Fame cornerback Roger Wehrli had four. Roy Green played receiver and defensive back. He had three interceptions on defense, and he had 33 receptions for 708 yards and four scores.
