We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Wednesday, June 17, is 88 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 88 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1988 season for the Cardinals.
1988 was the Cardinals' first season in Arizona. It was an important season because it was the beginning of quarterback problems. Neil Lomax, coming off a Pro Bowl season in 1987, had the Cardinals at 7-4, but then they lost their final five games and Lomax suffered a career-ending hip injury.
Receiver JT Smith, tackle Luis Sharpe and fullback Ron Wolfley were Pro Bowlers. Sharpe was a second-team All-Pro.
Lomax started 14 games and completed 57.6% of his passes for 3,395 yards, 20 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
They rushed for over 2,000 yards as a team, with Earl Ferrell leading the way with 924 yards and seven touchdowns on 4.6 yards per attempt. Stump Mitchell rushed 726 yards and four scores, averaging 4.4 yards per attempt.
Smith had a team-leading 83 catches for 986 yards and five touchdowns, while Roy Green caught 68 for 1,097 yards and seven touchdowns (team leader in yards and touchdown catches).
Safety Tim McDonald led the team with 115 tackles, and he forced four fumbles and picked off two passes. Safety Lonnie Young had 64 tackles.
Freddie Joe Nunn had a team-leading 14 sacks, while Ken Harvey was next with six. Cornerbacks Carl Carter and Cedric Mack each had three interceptions.
