We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Sunday, July 5, is 70 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.

With 70 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1970 season for the Cardinals.

A look back at the 1970 season for the Cardinals​


The Cardinals went 8-5-1 in 1970. It was the final season for Charley Winner as head coach. They started the year 7-2 but went 1-3-1 over their final five games.

They ranked fourth in the league in scoring at 23.2 points per game. They were fifth in points allowed, giving up 16.3 per game.

1970 individual leaders and honors​


The Cardinals had five players receive Pro Bowl or All-Pro honors.

  • FB Macarthur Lane: Pro Bowl
  • TE Jackie Smith: Pro Bowl
  • CB Roger Wehrli: Pro Bowl
  • S Larry Wilson: Pro Bowl, first-team All-Pro
  • LB Larry Stallings: Pro Bowl

Jim Hart started every game at quarterback. He passed for 2,575 yards, 14 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

Lane was the Cardinals' leading rusher with 977 yards and a league-leading 11 touchdowns.

John Gilliam led with 45 catches for 952 yards and 5 touchdowns. Smith caught 37 passes for 687 yards and four scores.

Wehrli led with six defensive interceptions. Wilson and Miller Farr had five interceptions each.
