We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals' regular season. Today, Thursday, July 9, is 66 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 66 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 1966 season for the Cardinals.
1966 was the first year for Charley Winner as head coach, replacing Wally Lemm after four seasons. Winner led the Cardinals to an 8-5-1 record, but it wasn't good enough to make the postseason. They scored and allowed 18.9 points per game, which was bad offensively but pretty good defensively.
They started the season 5-0 but lost 4 of their final 5 games of the year.
The Cardinals had eight players in the Pro Bowl:
Wilson was also a first-team All-Pro and was second in MVP voting. Stovall and Robb also were second-team All-Pros.
Charley Johnson started nine of the 14 games, passing for 1,334 yards, 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
Roland, a rookie, led the team in rushing with 695 yards and five scores. He also had the best punt return average in the league 11.1 yards and returned one for a touchdown.
Smith led with 45 receptions for 810 yards and three scores.
Wilson's 10 interceptions led the NFL, and he returned two for touchdowns.
