The Chicago Bears have made one big splash at the beginning of free agency, reportedly agreeing to a three-year, $40 million deal with safety Coby Bryant who spent the beginning of his career with the Seattle Seahawks.

Safety was one of the biggest positions of need on the Chicago's defense, as they face the possibility of losing both Kevin Byard and Jaquan Brisker to free agency, and they shored up at least one of the spots with the addition of Bryant.

Bryant's play over the last two seasons has now led him to cashing in on a big deal for the Bears this offseason. A big contributor for Seattle's Super Bowl defense, Bryant will have plenty to live up to, especially given his championship experience and leadership he'll take on in the Bears secondary. Here are five things to know about new Bears safety Coby Bryant:

Bryant won Super Bowl with Seahawks this past season

Bryant's biggest season was a big part of the Seahawks' championship run as he picked up a career-high four interceptions in 2025. With Julian Love and Nick Emmanwori on the roster and several pending free agents, Seattle had to face the likelihood of losing a player like Bryant, and he cashed in with a team that has a big need for his position.

Bryant allowed second-lowest passer rating among safeties in 2025

Bryant not only had the four interceptions during the 2025 season, but he also allowed the second-lowest passer rating in the NFL among safeties. According to Next Gen Stats, Bryant allowed a 51.4 passer rating when faced last season. A playmaker who can find the football, but also a very good cover safety, Bryant offers up plenty of talent and versatility.

Bryant transitioned from slot corner to safety

After being drafted by Seattle in the fourth round as a cornerback, Bryant made a move to safety ahead of the 2024 season, when he really broke out into the spotlight. Bryant had a 69-yard pick-6 touchdown during that season, where he was named a one-time Defensive Player of the Week. In the biggest game of his career, Super Bowl 60, Bryant had four tackles with one pass defended in the win over the New England Patriots.

Bryant was highly successful at Cincinnati

While playing at the University of Cincinnati, Bryant showcased so many different levels of who he is as a player, including playing with a broken hand throughout the 2018 season. Having suffered the injury back in 2017, Bryant continued playing in college with his broken hand, and he went on to win the Jim Thorpe Award in the 2021 season for the Bearcats.

Yes, he's named after THAT Kobe Bryant

His name is not a mistake. Bryant was named after Los Angeles Lakers and NBA legend Kobe Bryant, and even wears the jersey No. 8 in honor of his namesake. It's a very fun tidbit to discuss, one that the Bears fanbase may have plenty of fun with as Coby Bryant is now in the city where Michael Jordan reigned supreme.
