'Strong Candidate' Identified To Replace Brayan Bello In Red Sox Rotation originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Boston Red Sox have a rotation vacancy after optioning Brayan Bello to Triple-A Worcester following Thursday's rough start. A rookie could return to the majors to fill the spot.
MLB.com's Ian Browne called Jake Bennett a "strong candidate" for a promotion to start Tuesday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Before then, the newly acquired Joe La Sorsa will replace Bello on the active roster.
Boston acquired Bennett from the Washington Nationals last December in exchange for hard-throwing pitching prospect Luis Perales. Bennett posted a 2.27 ERA in Washington's farm system last season.
The 25-year-old made his MLB debut on May 1, allowing one run over five innings in a win over the Houston Astros. Bennett was shakier in his second turn, relinquishing four runs in a loss to Tampa Bay.
After being sent back down to Triple-A, Bennett has made a strong case for another big-league opportunity. He's allowed two combined runs in his last three starts, amassing 22 strikeouts over 15 frames.
WooSox interim manager Iggy Suarez said Bennett "keeps shoving" and is "doing all he can do" to prepare for another promotion, per Tommy Cassell of Worcester T&G Sports. The former second-round pick allowed one hit over five scoreless innings on Tuesday.
Although he struggled in his last start against Tampa Bay, Boston may still see Bennett as the best choice for the American League East matchup. The Rays have a .304 weighted on-base average against left-handed pitchers this season, down from a .330 wOBA versus righties.
A setback in Garrett Crochet's recovery could create a long-term rotation opening if the Red Sox don't return to Bello. Bennett may draw another opportunity to join fellow rookie southpaws Payton Tolle and Connelly Early in Boston.
