Few players around the NFL have flown under the national radar like Carolina Panthers cornerback Mike Jackson.

The Frankfurt, Germany native and University of Miami product entered the league as a fifth-round pick of the Dallas Cowboys in 2019. But he wouldn't catch on with "America's Team," having never played a game for the Cowboys before moving on to the Detroit Lions as a rookie.

Jackson didn't find a stable home until 2021, with the Seattle Seahawks. Then, after three seasons as a solid backup option, he was traded to the Panthers ahead of the 2024 campaign.

Since then, Jackson has established himself as a legitimate starter—serving as one half of one of the game's top cornerback duos. And that's why he, according to Zachary Pereles at CBS Sports, is the best breakout candidate for Carolina in 2026.

Pereles writes:

Jackson's 19 passes defended were tied for the league lead, and his 55.4 passer rating against as the primary defender ranked 14th out of 134 players who were the primary defender on at least 50 passes. In fact, Jackson was right behind his ballyhooed teammate Jaycee Horn in the metric. Individual coverage stats can be notoriously finicky year-to-year, but the Panthers just might have found a late-blooming standout here.

Jackson earned a career-high 79.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus in 2025, ranking fourth out of 114 qualifying cornerbacks. His 80.9 coverage grade ranked third-best at the position.

Considering that the Panthers are paying him just $10.5 million over two years, there is arguably no better value at cornerback in the NFL—at least for players who are no longer on their rookie contracts.

Needless to say, it's extremely rare for a corner to age this well. Jackson will turn 30 years old near the end of this coming season, so it will be interesting to see how long he can keep this up.

For now, the Panthers have a hell of a bargain on their hands at the game's most challenging position, and need to cash in as much as possible.
