Playing tight end is often one of the most demanding positions in football, with some of the greatest NFL athletes excelling as both blockers and receivers.
Throughout Pittsburgh Steelers history, there have been several tight ends who deserve to be recognized, including these three standouts.
Stats: 202 receptions, 2,879 yards, 20 touchdowns
Cunningham, selected by the Steelers in the first round of the 1976 NFL Draft, played 10 years with Pittsburgh. He is a two-time Super Bowl champion and was named to the Steelers All-Time Team. A reliable target for Terry Bradshaw, Cunningham is the third-best tight end in franchise history.
Stats: 329 receptions, 5,131 yards, 37 touchdowns
Nickel, a three-time Pro Bowler, was named to the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Time Team and Hall of Honor for his stellar play during the late 1940s and early-to-mid 1950s. Nickel set the standard for excellence at the tight end position in Pittsburgh, and he's the second best in Steelers history.
Stats: 592 receptions, 6,569 yards, 45 touchdowns
Heeeeath! There's no doubt that the greatest tight end to ever play for the Steelers is Heath Miller, who is responsible for the fourth-most receiving yards and fifth-most touchdowns in team history. A two-time Super Bowl champion and a two-time Pro Bowler, Miller was one of Ben Roethlisberger's favorite targets in his career and is no doubt the No. 1 tight end to ever don the Black and Gold.
