Mangold Directing 3:10 to Yuma Next
Source: Variety
February 21, 2006

Walk the Line director James Mangold and his wife, producer Cathy Konrad, have set the Columbia Pictures remake 3:10 to Yuma as the next film he'll direct. Variety says the film will shoot in the summer.

Mangold and Konrad boarded "Yuma" after getting a new draft from Collateral screenwriter Stuart Beattie, who rewrote scripts from Michael Brandt and Derek Haas.

The original 1957 Western, starring Glenn Ford and Van Heflin, is about a sheriff determined to bring a captured desperado to justice. Elmore Leonard wrote the short story on which it was based.

Will Tom Cruise Go for 3:10 to Yuma?
Source: Variety
February 23, 2006

Tom Cruise, who stars in and produces the J.J. Abrams-directed Mission: Impossible: III for Paramount, is eyeing several high-profile studio features for his next film, reports Variety. He's expected to make a decision within the next two weeks.

The lead horse is the new take on the 1957 Western 3:10 to Yuma, which James Mangold (Walk the Line) will direct this summer, with Cathy Konrad producing for Columbia Pictures.

Cruise became interested in the film after Stuart Beattie, who wrote the Cruise-Jamie Foxx starrer Collateral, turned in a rewrite of the script by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas. Word is that Cruise is interested in playing the villain, who is being brought to justice by a lone lawman.

Lionsgate Boards 3:10 to Yuma
Source: Variety
September 2006

Lionsgate has boarded Russell Crowe and Christian Bale-starrer 3:10 to Yuma, signing a deal to distribute the film in the U.S. The movie is a remake of the 1957 Western toplining Glenn Ford. It is set to start shooting next month.

Lionsgate struck the high-profile deal with Ryan Kavanaugh's Relativity Media, which decided to finance the $70 million film after Sony put the project into turnaround earlier in the summer, forcing director James Mangold and producing partner (and wife) Cathy Konrad to look elsewhere for money.

Lionsgate will spend a minimum of $30 million on prints and advertising. Generally speaking, the indie studio only spends $15 million-$20 million on wide releases.

Stuart Beattie, Michael Brandt and Derek Haas wrote the script. The storyline revolves around a desperado who is caught by a sheriff determined to bring the outlaw in. Sheriff's plans go awry when the desperado's accomplices stage an ambush.

-----------------------------------------------------

Glad Cruise won't be in this. It'd be nice to see some decent Westerns again, even if they're remakes.

I really recommend the original as well. Glenn Ford as a bad guy is excellent. Anyone know who is the bad guy in this. I am guessing Bale.

Crowe as the bad guy show be interesting. Here is a concern of mine: most of the original took place in a hotel room. Will they try to pull this off in this new version? Can they do it?

I was passing by the DVD section of the library the other day and the original version of this film was staring right at me. I took it as an omen and checked it out.

I saw this yesterday. I love most westerns and this one was very good. I've never seen the original so I have no idea how they compare but IMO this is the best western since Unforgiven.

Its supposed to have taken place outside of Bisbee and made its way to Contention, AZ(ghost town now). The landscape didn't even come close to matching Bisbee but most people probably wouldn't notice that.

It was filmed in New Mexico.

I knew that, I was just saying that the location didn't come close to matching the real Bisbee, my only real critique of the film. Most probably wouldn't even know that since most people have been fortunate enough to avoid that hole of a town.

Great movie! Bale and Crowe are outstanding, as is Peter Fonda and the other supporting actors. I didn't anticipate the ending, which is always enjoyable.

Terrific, terrific movie. That last 30 minutes or so was some of the best I've seen this year.
