An elite passer will be heading to Eugene for an early-season visit this fall. The Oregon Ducks are set to host 2028 quarterback Josiah Boyd on Sept. 18 when the Ducks take on Portland State on a Friday night.
Boyd, a four-star recruit from Moreno Valley, California, is the No. 2 passer in the class, according to Rivals. The Ducks are the early favorites in the race, landing predictions from recruiting experts for Boyd to ultimately commit to the Ducks. Oregon has put in a lot of work to establish a connection with Boyd, and so far, their efforts are paying off.
However, the Ducks do have some competition. Alongside Oregon, Kentucky is also seen as a contender. Boyd has also set three other game day visits for the fall. He will start his tour at USC on Aug. 29, when the Trojans open the season against San Jose State. Boyd will then make his way to LSU on Sept. 5 when the Tigers host Clemson. After a Friday visit to Oregon, Boyd will stay out west and visit UCLA the next day on Sept. 19 when the Bruins host Purdue.
If everything goes well on the first visit, the Ducks could look to get Boyd to return later in the season for a game at Autzen Stadium that promises to have a rowdier game day environment. USC has not offered Boyd yet, but UCLA has and is quickly rising in the race, so it could be a battle between Big Ten rivals for the California quarterback.
Boyd is only rising as a prospect, so programs will quickly have to determine how valuable he is as a player for their respective recruiting classes in 2028. Although Oregon has five-star Will Mencl committed in the 2027 class, the Ducks have never shied away from adding more talent to the quarterback room, either through or recruiting or in the transfer portal.
The Ducks do have another connection to Boyd. His cousin, Devon Blackmon, was recruited and enrolled with the Ducks as a wide receiver in 2011. After redshirting with an injury, he eventually wound up at BYU. However, Oregon quickly became Boyd's dream school as a result.
As a junior at Vista del Lago High School, Boyd threw for 2,920 yards and 19 touchdowns with three interceptions. He also ran for 462 yards and nine more scores. He is an elite talent, and the Ducks will have to work quickly to pull him in. So far, the odds appear to be in Oregon's favor after securing a visit.
