Summer is here, and it is everyone’s favorite time of the year, scouting time. Every year, we do Summer Scouting to preview college football for Bucs fans and give them names to follow and watch in the fall as needs pop up for Tampa Bay.

Are we going to write about quarterbacks? Offensive tackles? Edge rushers? You know it, but why? Because other NFL teams will draft them, just as they will draft every other position. It all matters whether these players end up on the Bucs, the Bears, or the Steelers. We write these to keep Bucs fans as informed as possible.

So if you are still with us, enjoy our latest Summer Scouting report as we prepare you for the Fall.

Player Summary

Yhonzae Pierre may be one of the more difficult edge defenders in the 2027 class to evaluate because his game is built around doing all of the little things correctly.

While many edge prospects win attention through explosive pass-rush highlights and gaudy sack totals, Pierre's tape repeatedly showcased a defender who consistently finds himself in the right place at the right time. Alabama trusted him with a variety of responsibilities, including traditional edge duties, off-ball linebacker alignments, hook/curl drops, flat coverage assignments, and stunt work along the defensive front.

His run defense stood out throughout the evaluation process. Pierre consistently diagnosed blocking schemes, identified open rushing lanes, and attacked downhill before plays had a chance to develop. Several reps showed him stacking offensive linemen, maintaining leverage, shedding blocks, and limiting what could have become explosive runs. His instincts and processing speed routinely put him in position to create positive outcomes for the defense.

Pierre's versatility is another major selling point. Alabama frequently asked him to carry running backs into the flats, patrol underneath zones, and operate from linebacker depth. He looked comfortable performing those duties, displaying the athleticism and awareness necessary to function in space while still serving as a capable edge defender.

As a pass rusher, Pierre remains somewhat of a projection. He possesses encouraging bend, good lateral movement skills, and enough athleticism to threaten blockers, but much of his success currently comes from timing, recognition, effort, and understanding offensive concepts rather than a polished collection of pass-rush moves. Continued development in that area could significantly elevate his draft stock.

The more tape that was studied, the more Pierre looked like a complete football player rather than a one-dimensional pass rusher. If his pass-rush repertoire continues to develop during the 2026 season, he has the tools and versatility to hear his name called much earlier than many currently expect.
