And yeah, maybe he will get shipped. This deal makes that possible. It's a pretty fair deal.

I'm used to seeing teams waaaay overpay and then they have to attach assets to move the player.

I wouldn't call him unreliable. I think we can rely on him for 60ish games. That's what he is. Maybe that's the plan. Backup Maluach in a year or 2. Not a bad salary for a backup of his skills. He's a pretty good player man!

Mark was 8th among centers in PER in the league last year. He was behind Jokic, Duren, Embiid, Williams III, Jarrett Allen, KAT, and Jonas V. The average number of games played last year by that group is 61.

He had a pretty normal year for an NBA center health wise.

It's a big risk discount deal, otherwise MW would be good for 25m per y, double the amount he got here. With this, Suns will use MW carefully during the season, to optimize the chances of him sufficiently healthy for the playoffs. When healthy he is top 10 center.
A great deal for Suns.

The Suns will be paying only $28.3 million combined next season for three key rotation pieces they re-signed:

Mark Williams: $11.7 million
Collin Gillespie: $10.7 million
Jordan Goodwin: $5.9 million

There are no durable players anymore. No matter who it is, you're figuring on maybe 60 games a season, and anything above that is a bonus.

Suns not even close to the second apron after signingt Mark Williams for those concerned. About $7.5 under it as of now. They will NOT go into the second apron.

If Mark Williams' new contract with the Phoenix Suns follows the standard 8% raise structure, it will look like this:

26-27: $11.7M
27-28: $12.7M
28-29: $13.6M

Phoenix projects to be $5.1M under their second-apron hard cap. The Suns currently have all 15 standard roster spots filled.

I think it's a lack of good options. Gambling on injury prone players rarely pays off but I'd still take 60 games of Williams over 82 games of a Nick Richards level player. And I doubt we can attract/afford anyone better than Richards let alone as good as Williams.

That's really about the size of it, though... making the best of a bad situation doesn't make it any less a bad situation.

Anyone trying to hopium their way out of the reality that the Suns are screwed six ways to Sunday for the next 4 to 5 years because they both traded away all of their meaningful draft capital AND they leveraged themselves up against salary cap restrictions with a few really bad trades, is fighting a losing battle. That's all going to catch up with the Suns eventually - maybe or maybe not next year, but very certainly soon after.

I’m
Not saying it’s one to one. I’m just saying we’re loading up almost to the second apron by signing role players to long term deals for a team that barely made the playoffs. That just doesn’t make much sense to me… especially in Williams’ case where we have a young promising big who needs court time AND is cheap and so far can actually be depended on to stay on the court.

Locking in a perennial 8 seed close to the second apron just seems like masturbating with a cheese grater. Sure, you might get off at the end of the day, but it’s gonna be pretty painful to do so and the aftermath could sting for years.
