The New England Patriots will soon take to the practice field once more with training camp set to begin later this month. When players do return to Gillette Stadium, the focus will have shifted from instructional periods to competitive ones, and the road to 53 will ensue.

It was an offseason marked by aggressive maneuvers that left New England with 45 new additions to the preliminary 90-man roster. With just as many returning contributors, the bulk of the roster will be vying for a select few openings on a team fresh off a Super Bowl LX appearance.

On this week’s Patriots Roundtable Podcast, Eddie and Tyler use the lessons learned through the Patriots’ spring practices — Organized Team Activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp — to re-assess and predict what the roster will look like once cutdown day arrives.

Examining each position room, the hosts will highlight which groups are set with proven starters, and where competition may determine who makes the final 53 — and who is on the outside looking in. We’ll showcase the most important position battles on offense and defense, and how the decisions made in August may shape the team for the entirety of 2026.

The game will be won and lost in the trenches — and this is the first time we’ll see the line of scrimmage move with fully-padded practice sessions. New England invested into the offensive line to re-establish a consistent ground attack and provide Drake Maye with a more reliable pocket in the passing game. On defense, questions surround the edge room and the lack of a true nose tackle. Now, each will be put to the test for the first time, and will give clues toward future performance.

Both sides of the ball will need to see standout contributions on the practice field in August to fill depth on the line of scrimmage — and that extends to the tight end room on offense, where Julian Hill’s season-ending injury has left the Patriots looking for answers to fill the “Y” role. Will training camp be Eli Raridon’s breakout period, or will others like Tanner Arkin and C.J. Dippre turn heads for their physicality at the point of attack?

Decisions made in the trenches will impact the remaining available open spots on the rest of the roster, with more cuts to be made along the perimeter. New England has options at wide receiver, but with seven contributing players, one will likely be an odd-man-out. Will that be Kayshon Boutte, or will the Patriots go in a different direction?

Training camp is a critical step in determining the final makeup of the 53-man group that takes the field in September, and will provide answers to the burning questions of New England’s offseason. We’ve seen glimpses of the vision that has guided the Patriots’ roster construction all spring, but that will be put to the test soon.

From the trenches to the perimeter and everywhere in between, the episode explores the difficult decisions that lie ahead and what those choices could mean for New England’s ability to make another deep playoff run. On this episode, we lay out the key battles to watch and the strategic decisions that could set the Patriots up for success both this fall and for years to come.

Tune in to this 53-man projection to hear where the roster stands — and where it might still evolve — before training camp.
