I know the draft is a little over six months away but looking on Baseball America's website it seems to be a great pitcher's draft. We have the 11th pick and supplemental picks after the 1st and 3rd rounds.

Some names to know:

Andrew Miller - Big, dominating RHP from UNC already touted as the top pick in the draft.

Daniel Bard - Another UNC product that will team with Miller to form one of the best 1-2 punches in college baseball.

Kyle McCollough - UT ace that was on the first team summer All American team.

Tim Lincecum - One of the top P's in the Pac 10

Kyle Drabek - Son of Doug, can play both SS and is a pretty good LHP, high schooler.

Matt Latos - Big HS LHP, started for the East squad at the AFLAC All American game

Tommy Hanson - JC pitcher so probably not well known but had an amazing summer league w/ a 7-1, 0.71, 116 K's in just 11 games.

Andrew Milller.... if we get him... I will love the D'Backs until the day I die. I dont care if they are 1 and 161.... if he falls to us.... just awesome. He is considered the best player in drafts and if we get him then, nationally, we would have the best avaliable in the past 3 drafts. He is a great pitcher already!!!

Not that I follow college baseball at all, but I remember reading a BA article a while ago and I am pretty sure Andrew Miller is lefthanded.

Yeah he is. There is another Andrew Miller who pitches in the Indians' organization and is a righty. Perhaps he mistook the two?

The guy you're thinking of is actually Adam Miller.

With the recent speculation that Upton is going to sign, I thought it would be interesting to look at this years draft.

Unless these players are signed they will re-enter the draft:
Luke Hochevar rhp U. of Tennessee (Dodger's pick #40 overall)
- Really good pitcher, but is a Boras client. He has great potential to be a top starter (#1 or #2)

Mike Pelfrey rhp Wichita State U. (Met's pick #9 overall)
- Someone else we considered with the #1 overall pick. Great potential and room to grow into his 6'7'' body.

The rest of the players not signed between the 1st and 3rd rounds are High Schoolers and therefore cannot be drafted eligible.

In the upcoming draft we will have picks #11th, 33rd (for Worrell), 55th (54th if Mets sign Pelfrey), 87th (Giants 2nd rounder for Worrell)(again this translates into the 86th if the Mets sigh Pelfrey), and 88th (87th if the Mets agree with Pelfrey).

Is Pelfrey a Bora's client too? I know Hochevar will fall but I don't know if Pelfrey will fall to 11.

Pelfrey is also a Boras client. So he could fall to us at 11. However, I do not know how much money we are willing to spend this year with the recent signing bonuses. I would not mind seeing Nippert and Pelfrey being in the rotation. Anytime you get two 6'7'' pitcher with plus-plus fastballs on your team they are going to win a lot of games.

However, I would stay away from Hochevar, unless he falls to the 5th or 6th round. He is a headcase with great stuff, but still a headcase.

The pitchers I would love to have are (in this order):
Andrew Miller lhp North Carolina (6'6'' lefty was drafted by the Devil Rays in the 3rd round, but Andrew decided to attend college and is in line to be the #1 overall pick. Last year he was 8-4, with a 2.98 era and 104 strikeouts in 97 innings.)

Ian Kennedy rhp USC (Oh please oh please oh please!!! I saw this guy pitch and wow. Just wow is all I have to say. Last year he was 12-3 with a 2.43 era and 158 Ks[led NCAA] in 117 innings. In addition, he had a batting average against at .201. The only knock on him is that he is 6'1'' and under 200 pounds. Scouts look for the 6'4''+ pitchers and drool at the potential they have. However, Ian has shown me enough, live and stats, to think he can be a good pitcher in the majors. I might actually rank him higher than Miller. He probably won't fall to us, but I can dream can't I?)

David Price lhp Vanderbilt (a 6'6'' lefty with a plus fastball is a great prize. However he is only a sophomore and might not be eligable)
Mike Pelfry rhp Wichita State U.

Max Scherzer rhp Missouri (had a 1.86 era which is better than both Miller and Bard. Walked 41 in a little over 100 innings, so that is a worry. Opponents batted under .200 against him)

Andrew Brackman rhp North Carolina State (another sophomore, but this guy is 6'10'' and averaged a K per inning as a frosh)

Daniel Bard rhp North Carolina (Bard doesn't impress me as much as other pitchers. His era was above 4 and he didn't average a strikeout per inning. He was also just 7 and 5 last year.)

Jared Hughes rhp Long Beach State (6'7'' and room to grow, he has a potential plus-fastball. Possibly with our pick for the Giants signing Worrell?

I would be thrilled if we ended up with Pelfrey, Kennedy, and Hughes with our first 3 picks. Kennedy may be small but look at Cesar Carrillo, a small guy with electric stuff. I think you have to be a junior to enter the draft if you are in college, I may be wrong though.

I doubt we can get all three. However, I think that Pelfrey and Hughes would not be too far off. I would still pick Kennedy over anyone else in the draft. The current track record for USC pitchers in the majors and prospects is great; Prior and Reyes for example.

In addition, 6'1'' isn't too small but it is not seen as the prototypical pitcher's frame (i.e. 6'4'', 6'5'', 6'6'', etc.). So he might fall to us. If he does, then I think we have gotten my top players in the past 3 drafts. I know he isn't considered the best nationally, but he has really impressed me.

Would you be against us going after Hochevar? Was supposed to be top P last year and up until the bad outing at the CWS he was having an outstanding season, might be a little pricey.

I would be against us going after him with any pick before our 4th round. If he falls to the fourth, then I say take him. However, he is still a headcase and is demanding a lot of money to sign.

I would love to have Kennedy. I saw him pitch against the Cats last year and he is going to be a star. He should dominate the Pac-10 again this year. USC will almost be favored when they play every Friday night in the Pac-10.

The Mariners are drafting that chick from Desperate Houswives?
Maybe in one of the later rounds the Dbacks could draft a hot actress too.

Baseball America is reporting that the Mets and 2005 first-round pick Mike Pelfrey have agreed on a major league contract.
Pelfrey, a Scott Boras client, was perhaps the best pitcher available in last year's draft, but he slipped to the Mets with the ninth pick because of his bonus demands. The product of Wichita State could contribute as soon as 2007.

Well it looks like the draft class got a little weaker with this.

Also that mock draft looks about right, but I really am not too impressed with our pick's statistics.

Wow Kyle Drabek at 4. I hope either Kennedy falls to us or take Hughes, but Bard would be a nice pick.

I don't like Bard as much as most of the scouts. He hasn't performed up to his potential, but I guess I should wait to see how he performs this year.

If Drabek does go at 4, it's because the Pirates are looking for the nostalgia of having Doug's kid on the team. They've got so much pitching depth on the farm and would be assassnine to pass on Wes Hodges.

Looking at this list, the Orioles have a pretty good amount of picks, while both the Dodgers and Giants have lots most of their earlier picks (2nd and 3rd rounds).

I found this list of college players on another website:
College

Daniel Bard, RHP, North Carolina

Bard was one of the top high school pitchers in 2003, but wasn't drafted until the 20th round by the Yankees because of a strong commitment to UNC. He was the ACC Freshman of the Year in 2004, then went 7-5 with a 4.22 ERA as a sophomore. He'll try to improve his stock in the Cape Cod League this summer.

Dallas Buck, RHP, Oregon State

Buck put himself firmly on the map with an outstanding Cape season last summer, going 4-1 with a 0.77 ERA. He followed that up this past season by going 11-1 with a 1.97 ERA and 114 strikeouts in 114 1/3 IP. Opposing hitters managed just a .187 average against the sophomore. Oh, and he's also a defensive back for the football team.

Ian Kennedy, RHP, Southern California

Another top high school arm in '03, Kennedy was drafted by the Cardinals that year. He pitched on Team USA last summer, posting a 3.81 ERA and striking out 40 in 26 innings. The Trojans ace went 12-2 with a 2.58 ERA, striking out 150 against 36 walks in 111 2/3 innings in 2004. He'll get to pitch against wood bats this summer in the Cape Cod League.

Andrew Miller, LHP, North Carolina

Miller was taken in the third round by the Devil Rays in 2003, but opted to become a Tar Heel instead. The right-hander went 8-4 with a 2.98 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings this year as a sophomore. He'll join Bard in the Cape this summer.

Drew Stubbs, OF, Texas

Another 2003 third-rounder, Stubbs headed to UT instead of signing with the Astros. The center fielder has hit .331 with 11 homers, 45 RBIs and 31 steals for the college powerhouse this season. He'll match wits with his wood bat in Cape Cod against some of the pitchers on this list this summer.

High school

Kyle Drabek, RHP/SS, The Woodlands, The Woodlands, Texas

The name may sound familiar to you. His father, Doug, won 155 games in a 13-year big-league career. Kyle is built much like his father at 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, and can throw in the low '90s already with a hard slider. Drabek is also a wide receiver on the football team as well; he's a tremendous athlete.

Jared Mitchell, OF, Westgate, New Iberia, La.

Mitchell is an outstanding athlete and a good student (3.5 grade-point average). The center fielder may have to make a decsion between playing college football (he's a quarterback but might move to wide receiver if he goes the football route) and beginning a professional baseball career next June.

Gavin Brooks, LHP, Rancho Buena, Vista Vista, Calif.

Despite some injuries this spring, Brooks projects to be one of the top high school lefties in next year's class. He's got tremendous command as a polished southpaw while being able to consistently hit 90-92 mph with his fastball. He's been selected to participate in the AFLAC All-American Classic in August.

Kasey Kiker, LHP, and Cory Rasmus, RHP/3B, Russell County, Phenix City, Ala.

Talk about a good high school team, these teammates make Russell County a powerhouse. Rasmus' brother, Colby, was a first-rounder this year. They won a state championship in 2005 and Kiker and the younger Rasmus are poised to do it again. Both have been selected to play in the AFLAC All-American Classic in August.

Jeff Rappaport, OF, Westlake, Westlake, Calif.

Another AFLAC Classic participant, Rappaport is a toolsy outfielder. He's got plus speed, a plus arm and and has already shown tremendous bat speed with wood. He's an all-out kind of player with plus athleticism.

Does anyone think there will be some good pitchers that slip to the D'backs with their supplemental and second round picks?

There are always players who slip and hidden gems that are found in the later rounds. However, it will probably be a few years after the draft until we realize what we found.
