Twenty individuals and three relay teams from Allegany and Garrett counties qualified for the Class 1A indoor track and field state championship meet.

The state meet is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 17, at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex in Landover.

Three locals won region titles at the West Region meet last Saturday: Allegany’s Briley Linaburg (pole vault) and Wade Napier (500m), and Mountain Ridge’s Aynsley Hawkins (3200m).

Athletes earned a spot at states by recording a top-two finish at regionals, by meeting the state qualifying standard or by finishing within the top six across all regions.

The area second-place finishers include Hawkins in the 1600m and teammate Sophia Brilll in the 3200m, and Fort Hill’s Jaden Emerson in the 55m hurdles and Austin Zembower in the shot put.

Allegany’s Dusty Long met the qualifying standard in the 3200m, and Fort Hill’s Ella Bennett did so in the high jump.

Additional student-athletes had to wait and see if their times would be good enough to qualify following the conclusion of the other regional meets.

Mountain Ridge, which was the runner-up at regionals with 61 points behind Liberty (78), will also be represented at states by Brill in the 1600m, Ashlynn Hawkins in the 800m, Caroline Orndorff in the 55m hurdles, Lillian Rase in the shot put, Mauriana Sweitzer in the high jump, and Alyah Hutchens in the pole vault and high jump.

Allegany’s Jacob Cage, the only ninth-grader to qualify for states locally, will compete in the 55m hurdles along with teammates Sully Watkins (shot put) and Leigha Read (3200m).

Fort Hill’s Bobby Brauer (55m hurdles), Sadie Hamilton (55m hurdles) and Kylee Rice (55m) also qualified.

Three local girls relay teams will also compete at states: Mountain Ridge’s 4x400 relay (Orndorff, Fiona Ruddell, Abby Malone, Ashlynn Hawkins) and 4x800 team (Aynsley and Ashlynn Hawkins, Ruddell, Brill) placed second along with Fort Hill’s 4x200 (Emerson, Hamilton, Rice, Arriana Sanchez).
