SMITHSBURG — The Mountain Ridge girls captured the Class 1A West Region track and field championship last week at Smithsburg High School, and 74 locals qualified for the state meet.
The Mountain Ridge girls took first with 130 points, 14 better than second-place Brunswick. Fort Hill was third with 85 points, Allegany eighth with 59, Southern ninth with 25 and Northern 10th with 15.
Smithsburg won the boys region championship with 140.5 points. Fort Hill was second (103), Mountain Ridge tied for fourth (78), Allegany placed seventh (61.5), Southern finished ninth (12) and Northern ended 11th (three).
Mountain Ridge's Zach Haberlein led the way with three region titles in the 100-meter run (10.95), 200m (22.09) and 400m (49.88).
Fort Hill's Casey Martz took first in the shot put, with his 53' 1.25" throw more than six feet better than second place, and in the discus (142' 10").
The Sentinels' Chase Lamb won gold in the 300m hurdles (41.25), and EJ Scott finished first in the long jump (20' 1.25").
Fort Hill's 4x200m relay of Lamb, Channing Logsdon, Neek Taylor and Harley Twigg won the title, and so did Mountain Ridge's 4x400 team of Austin Simpson, Chase DeWitt, Caden Zeigler and Haberlein.
On the girls side, Fort Hill's Jaden Emerson and Mountain Ridge's Sophia Brill were multi-event region champions.
Emerson won titles in the 100m (12.38) and 100m hurdles (14.96), and Brill did so in the 800m (2:21.53) and 1600m (5:11.08).
Other Miners region champs were Aynsley Hawkins in the 3200m (12:24.52), Carolyn Hughes in the 300m hurdles (46.51) and Carolyn Orndorff in the long jump (16' 0.25").
Sadie Hamilton of Fort Hill was the triple jump champ with a leap of 34' 7", and Allegany's Briley Linaburg won the pole vault with a 10' 6" height.
Mountain Ridge's 4x800m relay of Brill, Aynsley and Ashlynn Hawkins and Fiona Ruddell also took first.
Allegany led the way with 22 state qualifiers, followed by Mountain Ridge (19), Fort Hill (17), Southern (nine) and Northern (seven).
Athletes qualify for states by finishing in the top two in each region or by having one of the next eight-best performances across all regions. This typically creates a state field of 16 per event.
The state meet will be held at Morgan State University's Hughes Stadium. Class 1A competes on Thursday and Saturday.
Admission is $10. Ages 6 and under are free. Visit the GoFan app or website to purchase tickets. There will be no on-site ticket sales.
