The NBA World is eagerly anticipating league icon LeBron James’ free agency decision as he evaluates different options. The Cleveland Cavaliers have been considered one of the favorites to land James this summer before this past season even finished.
A notable NBA analyst recently offered a strong take regarding the speculation that James will return to Cleveland for his 24th season.
NBA Analyst Strongly Questions How LeBron James Fits With Current Cavs Roster
NBA analyst Kevin O’Connor doesn’t believe a James/Cavs reunion will help the organization return to the Finals and James is not a great fit with the current roster.
O’Connor said on X, “I don’t get the appeal of Cleveland for LeBron other than the fact it’s home. James, Mitchell and Harden is an awful fit. Not enough D, not enough off-ball movement. Not enough spacing with Allen and Mobley either. A flawed bench. I just don’t get it.”
O’Connor added “If he’s going to Cleveland for a homecoming, sure, that’s a great story for the final chapter. But Cleveland’s roster needs a lot of work to make any sense for basketball reasons.”
The Cavaliers have been one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference during the last few regular seasons, but their playoff shortcomings are becoming an issue. Even at his advanced age, signing James would be viewed as the move that could potentially put the organization back in the NBA Finals again.
O’Connor questions the fit with James sharing scoring and playmaking duties with other generally high usage stars Donovan Mitchell and James Harden. On paper, it looks like a similar situation James left in Los Angeles, where he eventually became the Lakers’ third option behind Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves.
The James/Mitchell/Harden trio would face similar defensive questions as the James/Dončić/Reaves trio did in Los Angeles. James appeared more comfortable sharing the court with either Dončić or Reaves as a duo while the other was out of the game.
Perhaps that would be the case in Cleveland, with James sharing the court most of the time with either Mitchell or Harden, with Max Strus or Sam Merrill also in the lineup for extra shooting.
It’s also possible the Cavs decide to go in another direction and decline to re-sign Harden, though that seems unlikely considering the organization traded young All-Star guard Darius Garland to acquire him.
O’Connor also mentions the Cavs’ star frontcourt of Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley. Many NBA insiders believe the organization would likely trade one of the big men if they sign James to help balance the roster.

However, the strong defensive duo of Allen and Mobley would help clean up any defensive mistakes from the James/Mitchell/Harden trio, something James didn’t always have in Los Angeles.
Ultimately, James may believe he has a better chance of winning another championship by going back to the East. However, O’Connor believes James should consider other suitors and that the Cavs should explore other ways to strengthen their roster.
