The US/Australia match is going to be interesting. From everything I saw, the Aussies played 5 in the back against Turkiye. The Aussies were loading up the box and Turkiye was struggling to figure out how to break it. The Aussies even had their mid pretty deep on defense. Both Aussie goals came of counters when the Turks had trouble getting back. Turkiye for their part got unlucky with a shot hitting the post and the Aussie GK making a great save.

For whatever reason when Turkiye got behind and late in the match, they still didn't get numbers up in the box so Australia with the loaded box was able to defend them quite easily, although even with the numbers Turkiye still generated some good chances late.

If the US can break through early and force Australia out of their defensive position, then it could be a rout. The biggest thing for the US is to not get frustrated and allow Australia to counterattack. They need to just keep pounding until a goal happens.

That sounds like Turkey’s strategy. :)

Hugh upset today, Cape Verde, a tiny island off the West coast of Africa held Spain to a scoreless draw. Cape Verde with a population of 500,000 people. This is shaping up to be one hell of a World Cup. I hope the US team is paying attention to these scores and realize no one can be taken lightly.

I was actually surprised they took the shot but then I remembered tiebreakers include goals so I assume that's why? It was a great shot don't get me wrong just surprised me they didn't just run it out. But I guess you never know when you will need that one goal to advance to the next round.

I've mentioned before I grew up with Chris Sullivan(now goes by Christopher) who played pro soccer and was on the US World Cup team. He's still active in it as a coach and announcer. He posted something the other day of him with Claudio Reyna and Gio when I Gio was I think 8, Chris' son Michael was in the pic too. They never played together I think Reyna came in a couple of years after Chris' national team career ended but I guess they have been friends for years. He was pretty happy for Gio posted about it on FB, said as someone who never scored in a WC game I am glad he got the chance to do so.
Thats awesome. Yeah it absolutely is the right thing to do. Because goal difference matters. I just think the mentality with berhalter was different. It was more conservative and we know that gio most likely wasn’t going to play for him.
