A big brother wedgie/wet willie/frat boy kind of middle finger “F THEM PICKS!” gesture to LaFleur? We know McVay could care less about first round picks. It would not surprise me at all if he did this just to bust Lafleur’s balls.
I doubt that very much, but it is funny to think of. Drafting a backup quarterback/QB of the future is doing them no favors trying to catch Seattle.

I think McVay knows he’s untouchable and acts like it. If things go wrong, he can go into tv. But he knows he’s not getting fired no matter what he does.

Yeah, but he’s still a competitive guy wants to win. I think he’s just thinking long-term. Stafford’s not gonna be around forever.

lol. I don’t think McVay is worried about ML.
that’s my point. not worried about ML, playing a prank on him. I wouldn’t be surprised if he traded Simpson for a 5th round pick to another team just to bust his balls.

How often does drafting a QB of the future when you already have a linchpin guy work out? I mean, the Packers have hit on it twice, but almost no one else in NFL history that I can think of off the top of my head has made it work.

McVay, quite clearly, hated the pick.

I don't know that I've seen a coach that obviously not on board with his GM during a press conference.

I am sure tomorrow there will be some damage control but when the coach is leaning back, with his arms crossed, veins pulsing in his face and saying stuff like he won't go into the decision making process and that their 1st round pick will have to fight with last seasons 5th round pick in the pecking order... I mean, there is no question.

The GM clearly drafted Simpson with an eye on shelfing him and Ty taking over in a couple years when Stafford is done, but that is bonkers to me. Simpson isn't some raw clay you need to mold... he's relatively small, he isn't mobile, he doesn't have a great arm, he's going to be 24 in a few months and what little experience he got in big moments he was terrible.

Have fun rams.

Well, it appears that Simpson and McVay had several phone calls before the draft. So, the "McVay hated the pick" theory is busted.
Per ESPN NFL Draft grades on tv today

Still don't buy it. No reason for McVay sit there looking like his head might explode in that presser, no reason for him to continue their supposed subterfuge as the pick had already been made.

This is just spin and damage control out of LA.

Ty Simpson stated that he had several discussions with McVay and it was so hard to keep it a secret...PER TY SIMPSON actually making this statement. Go back and watch the ESPN show Draft Grades.

Let me guess, here comes the "it was just AI" response

I don’t doubt he’s saying it.

Nah, ML talked openly this week about how much the Rams had been scouting Ty and loving him for almost 2 years, while he was still with the team.

Here’s the presser with HC Sean McVay and GM Snead that has everyone evaluating what was going on with McVay:

On second look, I think McVay is pizzed because Snead is revealing too much of the internal thinking/plotting that went on behind closed doors of the Ram’s draft process. Also, note the answer regarding taking a backup who may well become the starter—recall Stafford went into the 2025 season with a big question mark because of his back. Snead is pretty open while discussing that—with McVay cringing at discussing that at all.

Are we looking at Stafford close to retirement because of that back—not something the Rams would want known at this point.

Plenty of reaction on Youtube of that original presser. Even had McVay coming out with ‘explanations’ for the pick the next day.

Anyone in that FO is safe until they catch the attention of owner Stan Kroenke. He owns multiple sports teams and hires guys and then lets them do what he hired them for—until they don’t collect the titles and SB wins.

The Ram’s primary purpose was to get a QB that they had rated high. This draft looked like the opportunity to do that—Rams —if they have MVP Stafford as their QB—are predicted by many to be SB winners in 2026-27. That means they are looking at the very last pick in the next draft. They lucked out with two #1's this year via their own pick and a trade. Rams got the needed CB help trading one of those picks with the second pick 'extra' to gamble on QB. Rams were backed into a QB decision based on next year being at the bottom of the draft and a an ancient QB (if he lasts).

They didn’t take Simpson with the SOLE purpose of trolling QB needy teams like the Cards, Jets, Steelers—but it sure added some extra laughs for them to leave those teams left empty-handed. Especially so with Simpson taking the Card's last '30' visit and keeping the Ram's 'secret' at the Card's expense. The last laugh will be for Simpson to be a bust regardless of a year behind Stafford.

Unless the Rams know Stafford may not be around for the full season. Will he decide to retire over facing long-term injury to his back? He's got a HOF resume already.

Jimmy G is reported to be thinking about retirement.

Simpson would be the starter, not the backup and not the QBOTF.

Why do most people rate McVay as a QB guru?
He's had 2 QBs in his coaching career and both were #1 overall picks in the draft.
His offenses have been pretty damn good but he's also had a premium QB.

Let's see if he can win with a Drew Stanton or Blaine Gabbert like Arians did.
