LeBron James is rewriting the NBA history books.
Today, LeBron will pass Robert Parish to become the No. 1 all-time leader in games played.
Legendary stuff from the King
Took Lebron into his 23rd season vs Parish accomplishing his in 21. A number of guys hit 21 seasons before, CP3, Dirk, KG, and Kevin Willis. Vince Carter had 22 seasons.
Kareem is #3 for games having played in 20 seasons but 1560 games. Kareem only played under 74 games twice, 62 and 65. Kareem also averaged fewer than 30 minutes a game twice, his last 2 seasons at 40 and 41 averaging 28.9 and 22.9 respectively. That's 78 games a season and 36.8 minutes an outing. I don't think anyone can argue this era is more physical than 1969-89 that Kareem played. Kareem had 18 playoff appearances, 237 games and 37.3 minutes a game.
LeBron's is impressive but 10 times he played in less than 74 games. He hit 71, 70, 69, 67, 62, 56, 55, 55, 49, and 45 games. He had 2 lockout seasons, the bubble year, and the shortened season after the bubble. That's still 70 games a season at 37.7 minutes an outing. He has 18 playoff appearances for 293 games, which is because the playoff series are longer now.
Kind of interesting to dig deeper though. I feel Kareem is a much fairer comparison since both were largely the man on their team every year, with Parish being relegated to being a 3rd or 4th option at the halfway point of his career.
