Wait, what? LaFleur doesn't even call the plays?!? So we'd be going AGAIN with a guy who has never been a HC, and who has no idea how to build a staff?

He must be a great interview.

He did a stint calling plays when McVay was sick, and I believe called plays for the Jets... but he's considered an up and coming offensive mind.

I'd argue that building a staff works in his favor - he's been on multiple NFL teams under the McVay and Shanahan tree, and has a brother who has been a head coach for years now. There's enough connections to build a staff, unlike a Kingsbury type.

Another important criterion is to hire a head coach who's willing to make changes if something isn't working, like Mike McDonald did when he fired his OC after last season and replaced him with someone far better. Gannon clearly wasn't willing to do this and I think it was a big part of his downfall in Arizona.
Putz should have been gone after year one

LaFleur called the plays for 2 years when he was the Jets OC. His offense was ranked 31st in the league both years.

Absolutely terrifying - it's not like LaFleur is replacing McVay, with all the superior coaches/players/FO/resources...he's going to be having to do it here. He may be an offensive genius but the inexperience is terrifying. Seems like a total shot in the dark when your franchise desperately needs a sure thing.

Who do you really want then? Some kind of retread that's been fired? (McDermott's obviously not coming here.)

So like... Nagy? Joseph?

There's no "sure thing" available. I'd rather take a shot on someone with upside than someone who already flopped elsewhere.

LaFleur will at least have his choice of QB(I think Kyler is gone regardless) & not get forced upon Zach Wilson.
Our options at QB, either through FA or the draft this year seem terrifying. He may get someone other than Kyler, but who the hell has any confidence that Monti will find that guy in such a bad market?

Yeah, not being of any interest to the best candidates is a big problem. The fact that guys like Flores and McDaniels would prefer to be an assistant vs. our head coach speaks volumes

At this point, I'd probably prefer to take a guy like Weaver or Brady. Hell I'd probably be more happy with Campanile - both are inexperienced but Campanile seems like more of a vocal leader. (Which is why I prefer Weaver to LaFluer as well). A Webb/Vance duo could be ok.

Why is LaFleur considered a better candidate than the DC on the Rams? (Chris Shula)

I don't fully get why you're hung up on calling plays under McVay. Matt LaFluer, Kevin O'Connell and Liam Cohen were his OCs and none of them called plays...and KOC, along with ML are the only two with multiple years under McVay. For me, honestly, it's a toss up. There is good and bad in each of these candidates.

Yeah, I'm just working off of what I've read. I wish we were able to hire a sure thing, but that's probably not in the cards for awhile.
