61 and 68 on Metacritic.

I will go see it in the theater but it feels like it's going to mega bomb. People will wait to stream it

Endgame is mostly forgettable now too. I wouldn't even have it in my top 5 of MCU movies.

I mean there are 37 MCU movies and they range from okay to amazing so it's easy to bump stuff down.

I would probably go based on rewatchability

Winter Soldier
Avengers
Civil War
Iron Man
No Way Home
Shang Chi
Guardians 2
Infinity War
Guardians
Endgame
First Avenger

All are bangers

I'd go with #1 Winter Soldier then more of a tier system after that over absolute rankings. With my top tier being:
Iron Man
Avengers
Doctor Strange
Guardians
Infinity War

End Game is like cusp between tier 2 and 3 for me

definitely looking at the law of diminishing returns with this threequel, but megambomb? I’ll be stunned. People always seem to expect these movies to bomb when they don't race out to huge opening weekend box office numbers and get good to tepid reviews, but these movies are relatively critic proof, it's gonna have Xmas break legs, it got an A cinemascore from people leaving the theater, it's the only big ticket blockbuster of the Xmas season and everyone at this point knows what they're getting from an Avatar movie... a theatrical ride.

It won't do anywhere near as well as the first two movies, but it still probably clears 400 million domestic and at least a billion worldwide. tale of the tape domestically will be in how much next weekend's drop is. previously years the first three weekend drops have been insanely low, like 25% or even 0%.

Yeah I want to see it maybe tomorrow.
Gotta figure this is the weekend a lot of people are travelling too. I also think there is Avatar fatigue, which is crazy considering this is only the 3rd movie. But considering the first one came out 14 years ago...

Opened at over 40 million less domestically than the 2nd one. Not good
Had the second biggest opening of the year worldwide at 345 million. Which isn’t bad either.

As was the case with the previous two Avatars, the tale of the tape will be in its legs and how much it takes advantage of Xmas break multiplier.

Curious though… what’s your definition of “megabomb”?

I also think that because there isn’t such a huge wait between movies, Cameron hasn’t been able to do what he’s always done which is bring the promise of advancing technology in movies to be part of the shock and awe that drew more people out the second time around.

Just failing to be profitable when it is the biggest movie.

I am hoping that these giant spectacles still work. It's why I am seeing it in the theater

That’s not really a megabomb. A megabomb is something that loses 200 million dollars like a Jon Carter.

Yes the basics of the story have been told before but this is more about the film than the plot. That is why seeing these the first time in the theater I consider to be essential.

Every time one of these comes out, it sets the next standard for hyper real motion capture. You lose yourself in these visuals in the theater in such a way that at least I can't replicate at home.

Okay got it
That said, this could still easily be a relative disappointment without being a megabomb. Despite this astronomical budget, these movies are expected to be the big breadwinners for a studio and the law of diminishing returns is definitely in effect.

And this third movie in the franchise is dealing with multiple factors the first two didn’t… lack of novelty, no new advancement in tech, more tepid reviews and, sight unseen, what seems like a ludicrous run time of 3 hours and 15 minutes which limits run times.

To be honest, I hope it just barely cracks profitability… enough for Cameron to get his next project funded at whatever level he wants, but not enough for another Avatar to get made. He’s one of the last spectacle directors alive and I want to see him playing in a couple new cinematic sandboxes before he (and theaters) kick the bucket.

God, they messed everything about that movie up, including the title. The movie legit sucked, too. I got to watch it for free and wanted my money back. What a waste of a glorious book series.

This could end up that bad if it doesn't grow legs this week. The reported budget is $400m which always seem to be less than what they end up with reshoots and the like. Then it was only $88m domestically with the largest international market being China which has the worst box office split for the studio. It's probably looking close to $1.3-1.4b to break even at that pace.

the other thing that is hurting this is back actual competition in the market. Back in 2022, everyone got the hell out of The Way Water and pretty much gave Avatar 2 three weeks all by it's lonesome to dominate multiplexes.

That ain't the case this year where you have another family film David taking a 24 million dollar chunk from the family friendly market, The Housemaid taking another 20 million dollar chunk from the adult market (although heavily skewed female, but probably some date heavy audience as well), with Spongebob and Zoo 2 taking another 16-18 million dollar chunk out of the market also.

And on Xmas day, you've got possible a chunk taken from Cameron/Cinefile combo with Marty Supreme and the biggest test of is Chalamet an actual movie star and a big dumb star driven comedy Anaconda, with Jack Black and Paul Rudd, swinging in to try and make comedy relevant in theaters again.

That's SIX new or holdover kids movies, all catering to wide range of audiences, that would otherwise be Big Jim's target for Avatar.

So who knows... maybe this thing does end up kind of a bomb. Maybe like... a worldwide billion dollar bomb, which sounds weird to say, but that would be the death knell for the series.

It's crazy that a billion dollar box office could be a bomb due to how big the budget was. I've been saying for a while that Hollywood needs to get the budgets back under control and this could end up being a poster child for it.

But you can’t really fault anyone for letting Cameron do what he wanted at the point he made this considering his last three movies were the 1, 3 and 4th biggest movies of all time.

Yeah, Cameron gets a longer leash than others. I meant that more in general with the budgets that seem to have little constraints. I'm tired of the special effects bonanza with 5 bucks spent on the story and writing. I'd like to see Hollywood get more balance back where we get more of an emphasis, and money*, on good writing and some constraints on the effects budgets so that directors have to be more creative again with the money they have. A balance more like it used to be than what it is now.

*I know the writers used to get the shaft. The money part is new to help encourage it now.

The family (all 10 of us) is going to see it the day after Christmas. My attitude is that if I wanted to see Shakespeare, I'd go see Hamlet. The visuals will make it more than okay for me, and the story is just gravy.
