2020 3rd round pick is Josh Jones T

I am trying to get a bead on this guy. The scouting reports seem to say opposite things. They say he is a high floor low ceiling guy. Then they say he is raw and needs development. Those seem contradictory to me.

The consistency I’ve been seeing is that there’s a lot of room for technique improvement, but he’s talented enough to overcome that initially and possibly start early on if needed. I think that has a lot to do with the coach carousel he dealt with at u of h. The high ceiling comes in with the scenario that if his technique improves with great coaching he can potentially be an all pro.

I’m still absolutely flabbergasted that he somehow fell to us.

Interesting Article... many of the most popular draft predictors had him in the first round as mentioned previously and Kiper's worst spot is 1st pick in second round.

I think Kiper gave us a B right? and said he thought it was best if we took Wirfs? If Kipper Jones mostly in the first round, I don't see why getting Simmons + a first round Offensive lineman isn't better than getting a lineman at 8th where all different teams had different ranks for the top four o-linemen..

It was a good interview. I always worry about these guys who say it's a chip on their shoulder though, whether it actually is or is just a demotivator and them trying to make the best of it.

I still love the pick.

Agreed, but maybe that salvaged it from his perspective and would’ve given us a C or lower if no quality OT was drafted, who knows. I think Josh Jones could end up working out better for us in our particular system when compared to Wirfs honestly too...

Admittedly, I didn't watch any Josh Jones games before the draft. I watched the Senior Bowl and practices but he was never on my radar because I didn't think he was going to be available to us.

I have now gone back and watched multiple games and here is my take:

Positives

• Consistent - he just seems to get the job done play in and play out
• Movement - he pulls to both sides with ease
• 2nd level - he can easily get to the second level and had plenty of successful combo blocks. Does a very nice job getting on a guy in space
• I haven't seen a game where he was beaten for a sack/pressure or a play where he looked bad. He did take a big bull rush from OU (IIRC) and got moved back big time + stepped on his own players foot but it didn't impact the QB/play. Gallimore got him on that again at the Senior Bowl practice (JJ was playing G).
• He is a technician - he clearly understands the play and how to take the best angles/drops/etc to consistently make the right blocks

Negatives

• 80% - he needs to finish his blocks better/more consistently. There are times he does a very nice job for about 80% of the play and blocks his man completely out of the way but then lets them back in late (QB scramble, doesn't sustain through the whistle, etc). Seems like an easier fix...anyone have experience with that?
• Power - he is not going to blow anybody up or manhandle people with power...he just gets in their way and moves them (not a huge negative...just an observation)
• Competition - always a concern with guys from schools like this one. Best schools he faced in 3 years were OU (2019) and maybe Washington St (2019). Maybe Temple (2018)
  • I don't think he ever faced an elite pass rusher

The bonus is he runs the Air Raid offensive scheme already and looks really good doing it.

I walked away very impressed with him...surprised actually. If he can handle the transition to the speed/power of the NFL, his floor is a solid NFL starter. His ceiling is much higher than that (including an upgrade over Humphries at LT in 1-2 years).

That's a bold statement. I hope you're right. I think he can be a good RT and fill in at LT if need be for a few games. I also believe he might be a great guard. But we all know that story.

Massie has been a solid NFL tackle for a long time.

Even when these young men are monstrous, they still are young. I tell people all the time, you do not stop growing till you are 27.

He can get bigger and stronger no doubt.

Another great pick in this draft.

It finally feels like the Cardinals are just taking what they are given.

Those were two very easy picks to make, but FAR too many times in the past the Cardinals pass up on this type of opportunity.


.....I think I will stop doing draft stuff and keep this luck going. Cause I haven't done ANY research and know how good these two picks are.

What may help Jones is that he is more mature than Massie coming out. Massie was a bit of a "knee-deep" when he came out of college.

I was also impressed when I watched the clip of Jones at the Combine! Then the Cardinals made a point of emphasis in a couple of articles:

Jones is already intimately familiar with the Cardinals' offense. He ran an extremely similar scheme as a left tackle under coach Dana Holgorsen at the University of Houston last season

Not sure whether the OL terminology would've been the same as Kugler's, but perhaps the concepts were already familiar? Regardless, it bodes well for Jones' ability to assimilate quickly.
