Teams don't get better by overpaying a player with a history of injuries either. See David Johnson.

In Humphries case, he hasn't even had the production to warrant a top 5 contract.

Instead of paying 15m to Humphries, you pay the #8 pick ~5m and a starting DE or LB ~10m. That isn't creating a hole...its shifting resources. You get two players for the price of one.

Shouldn't we be able to replace a top 15 LT with the 8th pick in the draft and spend that extra money on the defense?

And how can we know that #8 will be top #15 or better in season one?

If they sign Hump long tern they can structure year one in a fashion that leaves plenty of additional CAP to meet other needs via FA.

David Johnson hardly has a history of injuries that impact his productivity: he broke a wrist, not a leg, etc.

You pay DJ $5m in salary in year one of a long term deal, plus the prorated portion of a bonus and you pretty well have the same resources to dedicate to other needs.

If we don't answer some of the issues in FA, it won't be for lack of $$$.

Not exactly.

He tore his MCL last game of 2016. Then broke his wrist 1st game of 2017. Then we gave him all the money.

It doesn't quite work that way with cap management. If you want to have DJs cap hit at only 5m in year one you have to give him a big signing bonus as part of the deal. Which you then have to Pro rate over the remaining years which makes it hard to cut them later.

DJ hasn't been the same since he injured his MCL.

You can't pay Humphries 5m in the first year if he is averaging 15m/year sir. That would be salary cap suicide, especially for a guy that has only played 1 season out of 5.

I know how how the CAP works!

And, yes, that's precisely how it would be structured.

Johnson didn't tear his MCL. It was a strain and he didn't require surgery.

Of course you can defer part of year one to create a bit of room, if need be, and there's no suicide involved in a continuously growing CAP.

4 years $60m - $30m guaranteed.

(1) $5.0m (s) $5.0m bonus = $10m
(2) $10m (s) $8.3m bonus = $18.3
(3) $10m (s) $8.3m bonus = $18.3
(4) $5m (s) $8.3m bonus = $13.3

The continuously growing cap comes with other players getting contracts that increase proportionately each year. Every year the next guy wants to be "the highest paid ever." That money doesn't exist in a vacuum like every other player is going to remain under contract.

Also, just wondering, why do you always capitalize cap and make it CAP? It's not an acronym, it's called the salary cap.

True. And signing a left tackle for $15m per over the next 4 years would be a bargain.

And I like CAP!

You keep saying he tore his MCL and that is flat out #fakenews. He sprained his MCL which isnt the same thing as a tear.

I would rather pay Jack Conklin 15m/year and draft a LT than pay DJ 15m/year and draft a RT.

That's assuming ANY of the top tackles this year can play LT at even a middling NFL level.

Wirfs? RT mostly
Wills? RT
Thomas? Scouts doubt he can even hold up at EITHER tackle.
Becton? LT but he's raw.

Right....which means that if you signed Humphries to a 4 year, 60 million contract, 2 years from now he wouldn't be in the top 5 anymore.

As @Chopper0080 has pointed out again and again, most of the better LTs are considerably older than Humphrie. There is a direct correlation with age and performance for offensive line. They do get better with age, and DJ is still pretty young.

I just want to get better on the line, man. None of our players are or ever have been elite there in my lifetime, and it's tough to swallow another 4-5 years of a guy who is only worth re-signing because we're scared of the alternative. It seems like a perfect time to get a blue chip offensive line talent even if we suffer marginally for part of a year while he gets up to speed.

I'm not going to scream and cry if we retain him, but it's just so meh. Everyone seems to want these flashy/sexy picks without building what successful teams seem to have.

We also need to stop thinking about individual players when we evaluate the offensive line. Think of the offensive line as a unit.

Wouldn’t you agree this o-line played better this year than expected? What’s to say they won’t even be better with another year together?

No. I think Kyler bailed them out and they still sucked as much as I expected. They're a bottom tier OL, and just because they played like garbage instead of hot garbage does not mean they're improved.

What's to say they won't be better with another year together is that they're limited by talent. There is not a single guy on this OL that would be guaranteed a starting spot on any other roster in the league.
