Entire Body of Work: Phil Collins or Billy Joel

I could really care less. I can't stand either of them.

As a side note on the drummer debate, Phil Collins played in a fusion band in the mid-70s called Brand X. He did, in fact, play some marginally interesting stuff, although Kenwood Dennard stole the show with that band.

Nothing from the Genesis/solo era has ever inspired me as a drummer. I've been playing for almost 40 years. Give him credit for pioneering some drum sounds, but his skill as a drummer has always been far more suburban than he's been credited.

I've always been much more interested in Collins' drummer Chester Thompson.

Billy Joel by a landslide IMO. (I forgive him for all the crappy songs he wrote for Christie Brinkley in the 80's) I dont think people really understand what a talented piano player he is.

I like Phil Collins too. I just think Billy owns him.

Phil, IMHO.

Both have 150 million in album sales.

Phil is one of only 3 artists who have over 100 million in album sales as both a principal member of a group and as an individual (the others: Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson).

Even without the Genesis stuff, Phil wins in Grammy's won with 7 to Billy's 6. On top of that Phil has won an Oscar and two Golden Globes.

No one had more top 40 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart during the 1980s than Phil.

In 2008, Phil was ranked the 22nd most successful artist on the "The Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists". Billy? He came in 23rd.

To me, it comes down to, if I were on a desserted island and had to pick just one to listen to, who would it be? Billy Joel, hands down, with no disrespect to Phil Collins.

To be honest, if I were on a deserted island and could only listen to 1 of these guys I'd be a completely depressed bastard. I could think of hundreds of other albums I'd pick before either of these guys solo records (though I'd happily take an early Genesis album).

LOL. I can think of many albums I would much rather listen to as well. But, if I had to choose between the two, it would be Joel. And, I believe I could be happy for at least (or maybe about) six months.

"Make You Feel My Love" (also "To Make You Feel My Love") is a song written and recorded by Bob Dylan. It appeared on his 1997 album Time Out of Mind. Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Bryan Ferry, Joan Osborne and Adele have covered the song.
