I was just pondering this, and I'm sure plenty of you more knowledgeable people on here can enlighten me...

So, it appears the lockout will be over soon. (knock on wood). However, all this time that has been wasted would have been spent getting the work done (negotiations, etc) to get draft picks signed. So now everyone is going to have far less time to get this done if they are going to be signed & ready or whatever for the new season.

How do you think this will go down? Will the time crunch mean lower salaries for the rookies (because the players want to get playing so they get PAID), higher salaries for the rookies (because the rookies know they have the owners in a tight spot with there being less time between contracts & the beginning of the season), will this be addressed in the new CBA so it will all be moot, or will it still take just as long as always, and the rookies will be coming in late to the season?

Is my question just stupid? If so, feel free to say so, but explain why. :)

I would hope that if they install a rookie CAP...they would also install a rookie SCALE...which would make the signing much faster as the options are more limited....but you may still see holdouts as the top picks may want shorter contracts overall so they can get to a bigger payday sooner.

Considering all teams and agents do not start hard core negotiating with their 1st round picks until 1 week before training camp anyways for the most part, that wont change this year. So a late start wont effect that in that regard.

Where it will be effected is the amount of things to do in such a short period of time. Lets say the new league year starts July 15th as most suggest. We would also assume that teams are given a week prior to that to absorb the new rules and adjust their strategies. So there is a lot of things to do from July 8th to July 29th(when most camps should start). What would normally happen over the course of 5 months before training camp, teams now have to do over the course of 20 days.

I have a feeling you will see a lot of training camps without a teams full allotment of 80 guys at the camp. Over the 2-3 weeks of camp you will slowly see guys trickle in based on when they get signed or re-signed.

However, if rookie salaries are slotted, I fully expect picks to sign very quickly in the future I.E. in May or June. NBA rookies typically sign that fast with their slotted salaries.

That would make sense. No need to hold out if you're salary is already being determined by the new CBA, right?

Right, and wouldn't want to risk something happening and getting hurt before you sign.

Bump. Really curious to see how this plays out now, as I haven't seen the details of the new CBA; but what I should have included in my opening post is how re-signing existing players will pan out.

Charlie Johnson getting 72 mil? Would that have happened if there was more time to negotiate? I dunno.
