Draft: Trade: The Cardinals trade the #6 pick and the #102 pick (pending
compensatory pick announcement) for the #12 pick and #43 pick.

With the likely retirement of Brett Favre and with the Tavaris Jackson experiment coming to a close, the Vikings will put a premium on addressing the QB situation in the first round. They really like their 1st year QB Webb, but they decide after that he ultimately doesn't have the tools to be a frontline player in the NFL.

Blaine Gabbert goes off the board to Buffalo at #3 and with other teams in the top ten looking like they need a QB, the Vikings view the Cardinals as a trade partner. The Vikings trade up with the Cardinals to draft QB Ryan Mallett. I know many on this board don't like Mallett, and I'm in the minority that believes Ryan Mallett could be a fantastic NFL QB. Mallett possesses one of the best arms coming from the college ranks in many years. His size is not a detriment; sure he looks like a statue, but he moves well in the pocket and has scrambled for some big gains a few times in his career.

Some may point out the struggles of Coach Bobby Petrino's QBs in the NFL, but none have had the sheer physical talents that Mallett has. He is a winner, he is accurate, and would likely have the strongest arm in the NFL from day one. Mallett IMO, is like Derrick Anderson with big league skills. The Vikings will see these traits and will move up to draft him, since the 49ers, Titans, and Washington could all use a guy like Ryan Mallett. I wouldn't be upset if we drafted Mallett since I believe he could become a frontline NFL starter within a few seasons.

#12: Justin Houston. While I've advocated taking Robert Quinn and I like his over all long term potential better, the Cardinals decide to take the trade and grab this emerging 3-4 edge rusher instead since he's less of a gamble. Houston is rare like Von Miller, in that he has played in a 3-4 in college. He's a better prospect than Miller, because he's better against the run and better taking on blockers head on. Houston has lived in the backfield; this past season he had 67 tackles, 10 sacks, 18.5 tackles for a loss and the Georgia coaching staff credited him with 44 QB hurries. He's a bit of a one trick pony right now, but is still substantially better getting off blocks than Von Miller.

#38 is traded for Kyle Orton along with a future pick TBD.

#43: Nate Irving. Nate Irving is a fiery Player, one of the few collegiate ILBs that consistently make plays behind the line of scrimmage. His instincts, playing speed and aggression set him part. This past season he had over 20 tackles for a loss and 7 sacks which is rare for a ILB, but perfect if we're trying to improve the overall pressure our defense generates, especially if we bring in a coordinator like Butler that likes to bring many different rushers, from many different looks. While he's not a perfect fit as a SILB I believe Irving is one of those players that will excel at changing position. Imagine the havoc that a lineup of Dockett, Campbell, Houston, Irving and Wilson could cause?

#69: Titus Young. Titus Young not only improves our WR depth, but he also could step in as a punt returner. Young is very similar to Steve Breaston, but IMO, he's Steve Breaston with better hands. Young can be a dynamic player, and with more time in the weight room, could develop into an option as a future starting receiver. Precedence shows that the Cardinals put a priority on having good receivers on the roster, so two years in a row using third rounders on receivers isn't far fetched. This pick may change depending on whether we resign Breaston and/or add a decent free agent.

#133: Joseph Barksdale. Unfortunately I believe the Cardinals should use a higher pick, but I think most indicators in the past suggest that the Cardinals are comfortable with taking guys later and developing. While some teams have had success with this approach, the Cardinals have largely failed to find OL late in the draft. Barksdale is your typical LSU OL, great potential but has largely failed to meet his full potential. Barkdale will be initially cross trained at guard for a year.

#166 Weslye Saunders. While Saunders IMO is a round one-three prospect, he was suspended and subsequently kicked off South Caronlina's team for 2010. Saunders might sound like a blocking prospect based on his weight (270), but at this point in time he's considered a better receiver than blocker. He runs really well for a man his size and is able to get deep and catch the ball. But his size is the most intriguing part of his game because if he could develop into a good blocker, Saunders will become a very good NFL tight end.

We have the # 5 pick but your point remains.

Couple things I thought of today while discussing the draft today.

First off while I think its absolutely on the table, I think the Cardinals should hold onto the #5 pick. You have to like the chances of getting a cornerstone player with that pick for our defense. Saying that I defintely am not on the Von Miller bandwagon. For every play he is in the back field he has 4-5 where he compeltely overruns the play. I like Quinn better then Miller as he takes on tackles head on as well as with his speed moves. I just scared with trying to project these college guys at 3-4 OLB, especially with a Top 5 pick.

IMO You add a low risk top prospect like Peterson. Peterson has the best chance of any player in this draft to be top 2-3 at his position one day and even though we have Toler and DRC, I like getting Peterson and then all of a sudden getting your pass rush more time. I also believe we should be able to fill that gaping hole at OLB with a starter either via Rounds 2 - 6 or FA.

Also we are in PRIME position to get a 1st round graded QB with the 5th pick in the 2nd round. I think it will end up being a weak QB class with Gabbert and Newton going top 10 and thats it. I defintely see a world where Mallett and/or Locker fall to that spot, and if I am the Cardinals I select either of those guys even with their percieved flaws.

I like the Irving and Barksdale picks. Not sure about Houston at #12 (I think one of Miller, Quinn, or Smith will be available at that spot should we trade down) Know nothing about Young. Don't like Orton AT ALL. If we brought McDaniels maybe - but Orton was a scrub in Chicago and will revery back to being a scrub now that he is out of Denver. Theres a reason they have tried to get rid of him every where he goes. Its because hes just good enough to keep his job and go 8-8 every year. No thanks.

I am MUCH higher on Kolb, even with the expected draft capital it will cost. Orton is someone I guarantee we will be looking to replace no later then 2013. Its just that simple and I am not sure why after a decent half season for a 3 win team, hes all of a sudden worth a second round pick. Ecch Ill puke if that happens.

Not enough definite impact guys in your mock IMO so I would prefer to keep the pick and stay in the blue chip range as I hope we are never drafting this high again.

That logic goes both ways. Not sure why Kolb, in 19 games, 11 TD 14 INT 73.2 rating is suddenly worth the #5 pick in the draft or whatever Philly is asking. Those are very pedestrian numbers, worse than Orton's.

Oh and the Eagles are 4-5 in games where he has thrown more than 10 passes/played a meaningful amount of time. Orton, on the other hand, is 29-19 as a starter. I'm not saying Orton is good, but Kolb is vastly over rated and is behind Orton in career stats in win-loss ratio. TD-INT ratio. QB rating. Tied in YPA. 2% higher in completion. And Kolb was on a much more passer friendly offense in Philly than the Chicago team Orton was on.

Just say no to Kolb.

LOL Whoops, my mistake! :p

And with that you can take back pick #102, because with the 5th thats another 100 pts and the 102 pick is worth that.

We also have pick #180 due to this. Arizona has a 6th rounder from Tampa Bay thru Philadelphia (OG Reggie Wells).

Kolb to me is the best option on the market for a bunch of reasons. First off its not going to happen for the #5 pick by itself so just get that out of your head.

Kolb to me is the best combination of experience (if you dont want to go the rookie route) and still young enough and enough untapped potential to be QBOF. With Orton Bulger, or Mcnabb you have a stop gap. With Gabbert or Newton your likely forsaking this upcoming season. With Kolb you can expect to win next year and its reasonable to believe he has the goods to be a 10 year starter.

What am I basing that on? Well Kolb has never been handed anything so he's Wizs type of guy, is the only QB to throw 2 300 yard passing games in first two starts, and is a playmaker from all the time I have watched him. Plus an A + organzation and QB guru like Andy Reid went the entire offseason planning on him being the starter. Just like with Farve, they gave up on an icon to get him on the field.

So now let me ask this question. If Green Bay would have signed 2009 Vick, maybe Aaron Rodgers never gets the opportunity to showcase himself? Kolb has alot of similar characteristics to Rodgers, and I can't fault the Eagles for falling in love with Vick's ability. Hell he might be the best football prospect EVER. Thats not a knock on Kolb IMHO.

Is he a sure thing? Nope? Is anyone potentially available a sure thing? Youll have to point him out to me if hes there.

JUST SAY YES TO KOLB IN 2011. A first (next years or switching places this year) and a third should get it done.

I like all the picks with the exception of Irving who I think you have going way too early. He just doesn't impress me but I've been wrong alot before.

Can't trade 2011 draft picks for players. If you want to trade a 2012 second-round pick, I think I'd be down with it. I'm not sure about the 36th overall pick.

I like the draft, though.

Thank You...too bad we don't sign the checks...the team won't be the only ones in the hunt for Kolb as you well know. My second choice is Orton whom I think may NOT be leaving Denver now that Fox is there. I just don't believe he is going into the season with Tebow and someone else. Kolb as I mentioned would be a home run. Figure out another way to improve the linebacker position but qb with the potential to be top shelf is the key to winning and certainly would be a BIG boost to the overall play of the team

I agree on McNabb and Bulger, but Orton is only 29. That is still very young in QB terms.

Saying you can expect to win with Kolb when he is the only QB who has come in for the Eagles in the past 4 years and not had a winning record is making a huge assumption. I wouldn't flip firsts and give up that and a 3rd for him. No way. His numbers are no better than Jake Plummer's were and he plays on a very QB friendly offense. This is has been proven. If we get Kolb, you'll like him for the first 6 or so weeks because he's an upgrade, then you'll see that we're 2-4 and he's wasn't worth a first and you'll have buyers remorse. Mark my words.

LOL watch some film on the guy! He's extremely impressive. My only question about him is whether he's a fit in a 3-4 as an ILB.

The guy was easily one of the top 3 most impressive players I've watched film on, but the rub is how his game translates to the pros. He's a violent player and explosive, but he may not have the size to take on blockers in the pros. If he is able to do this, IMO he's a Pro Bowler.

Irving is strictly a 34 WILB and 43 WLB/MLB IMO. We would be wasting his talent if we had him at SILB engaging guards and centers every play.

Probably, I just love watching Nate Irving.

IMO he's going to be better than D Washington, he's more instinctive and more violent.

I'm on the Peterson bandwagon big time. Most sure thing in draft IMO.

I don't get the fascination with taking Houston so high. There is a decent chance he'll be available in rd. 2. If we just HAVE to go OLB with the first pick Akeem Ayers would be my choice if Quinn and Miller were off the board as they almost certainly would be if we were picking at #12

There still are big questions on both Mallet and Locker even at the top of the 2nd round where we'll pick. They may not even earn that spot.

If you indeed get Peterson or Akamura, who many percieve as the better cover corner, then getting an OLB, ILB or OT in the 2nd makes a lot of sence too. There should be a very good tackle on the board there in the 2nd.

I would wait until the 3rd round to see who shakes out there. Kapernick is probably as good a prospect as the two forementioned at this point.

if you have a problem with Millers size on the outside, why are you high on drafting an undersized inside linebacker and teaming him with the current undersized linebacker that was drafted last year?

It could easily happen. He's a late 1st/ early 2nd projection as it stands right now. A slow 40 will cause a slide as will not being able to cover in drills at the combine. The opposite can happen just as easily though and he blows it up.

The same could be said with any player coming out Cbus, even Miller. I don't think Houston or Miller will disappoint in the combine. Houston's get off is frightening!!! I can't see him getting past the Pats or Ravens, they know 3-4 rushers.

I think because of the emphasis on rush linebackers and his obvious athleticism he's much more likely to go up than down.

Watch tape on him, or at least I see impact player when I watch film.

IMO he's a lot more impressive than Miller. That's just me though, you may have a different opinion.

He's going to skyrocket up draft boards, especially if his workout numbers are good. Akeem Ayers isn't a 3-4 OLB, though some believe he could excel there.
