I've had Cox hi-speed cable for over 3 years now, and only recently did I notice on a flyer they sent me for their phone service that they also offer slower speed cable for $30/month! It was on the very, very small print at the bottom of the flyer.

So I called them up to sign up for their phone (sick of QWest) and asked her to switch me to the $30 service - no problem. Obviously this is something they don't advertise or mention cause I would've used it from the beginning. We don't download music or videos, so I don't even notice any difference in speed!

If you do a speed test, what kind of rate are you getting?

I am tired of $125 cable/internet bills.

I switched to their $14.99 internet. For browsing, it is just fine. When I play online games, my ping/connection is average to below average, but me saving $25 a month is worth it.

I believe that it is a 768/512 connection.

Looks like this is what they are offering;

Lite ($14.95) $9.95 first six months
512 kbps down
256 kbps up

Preferred ($44.95) $29.95 first six months
7 Mbps down
512 kbps up

What kind of speeds are you getting DCR?

I get closer to 768/512.

I can still get 150Kbps when downloading files and such, it isn't that bad. Playing a lot of console games and FPS, the connection sucks, but thats about it. It is worth the $30 a month savings. I had planned on scrapping the HD service too, but I never wanted to get rid of my DVR. I also planned on buying a SATA hard drive to backup my files on there, but never got around to it.

With football season coming, I'll just hold onto the HD service. My cable bill is now right around $100 vs. $130.

Most of my internet usage (believe it or not, it's not ASFN) is loading & downloading large files to/from an ftp, so I have to have the higher speed. My folks might like to know about this, though.

I'm going to try it tonight. If I can save $20/mo and not notice a huge difference, I am going to jump on it.

At Jason's place in SF, they get fiber to the house. :D

Damn, and here I am spending nearly $130 on an internet / phone / cable package from Cox.

Our apartment complex is offering free cable now, i think. I rarely use my home phone, and my internet pretty much sucks anyway. (Even though I'm using the second fastest package they offer.)

$14.99 sounds better than $130.

You are aware that is 'unbundled' - just for internet access alone. But it should bring down your overall price.

Yeah. I was stating that I'd rather just ditch everything and get the basic internet.

I used to work for Cable One. Not the greatest company.
