I thought he was too lean to play end in the 3-4 and too tall/immobile to play LB. Opinions?

Strengths: Massive DE prospect; unusually tall with very good build, enormous arms (35.6 inches) and bigger-than-average hands (9.4 inches). Displays good initial quickness for his size, can beat blockers to the point of attack and can make plays in the backfield. Plays with decent leverage for a player his height, shows good lower body strength and is capable of holding his own when teams run at him. Has above-average upper body strength, extends arms once in position and flashes the ability to shed blocks quickly. Takes sound angles to the ball, plays with a good motor when fresh and makes plays in pursuit. Wraps up upon contact and is an adequate open field tackler that flashes the ability to jar the ball loose. Plays with a mean streak, takes the shortest path to the quarterback and flashes the ability to push tackles back into the quarterbacks' laps. Flashes effective swim and rip move when he shoots inside. Shows adequate awareness and generally does a nice job of sniffing out screens. Doesn't always get hands up when isn't going to get to the quarterback but jumps fairly well and has very long arms so can make it difficult for the quarterback to find a passing window.

Weaknesses: Does not chance directions well, lacks ideal top-end speed and is going to have a harder time turning the corner at the NFL level. Doesn't have elite closing speed and is step slow getting to the quarterback at times. Doesn't always get great hand placement and isn't fast enough to recover in time to get to the quarterback when offensive tackles are able to lock onto him. High-center of gravity makes it difficult to get under offensive linemen's pads and struggles to anchor against double teams. Occasionally gets caught too far upfield and is vulnerable to draws. Appears to wear down late in games and needs to work on endurance.

Overall: Miami red-shirted Campbell during his true freshman season in 2004 and he started one of the 12 games he appeared in during the 2005 season. He started 12 of the 13 games he appeared in during the 2006 season finishing with 80 tackles including 20 tackles-for-loss. Campbell also recorded 10.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and three pass breakups that year. He started the 11 games he appeared in during the 2007 season finishing with 50 total tackles including 30 unassisted tackles and 12.5 tackles-for loss. Campbell also recorded six sacks, an interception, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and two pass breakups last year.

I think this kid is a solid 4-3 prospect, but I love him as an end in the 3-4. I'm very pleased with the pick.

He's 6'8" with the longest arms in the draft. Us old farts remember Doug Atkins and Ben Davidson.

He can play outside (DE) if he drops a few pounds.

He can play inside (DT) if he puts on a few pounds.

He plays with a mean streak.

He was projected by many as a first round pick.

What's there not to like?

He's 6'8 282. It looks like he has plenty of room to add more bulk. Great wing sspan and speed for a guy that size. He will be an asset in the 3-4 as a DE.

We needed a RB more than a DE. This guy is gonna have to play hard, as we have plenty of depth up front

I was pleasantly surprised by this pick. I thought we would go with "need" and draft Ray Rice. I like how athletic this guy is. I think he'll turn out to be somewhat like Dockett, able to go at DT or DE in Pendy's scheme.

Lest you guys forget that we dont play just a 3-4. We absolutley run a 4-3 during much of the game as well.

Branch is a DT or maybe a 3-4 DE. Campbell is a DE or a 3-4 OLB.

I really dont see that. He's 6'8 and 282lbs. That's WAY too big for a OLB in any scheme. Antonio Smith and DD play at 280 to 290. He's a 3-4 DE IMO.

Smith is upset and maybe wants a trade....he's doin an Ocho Stinko....pony up or this guy will beat your arse Tonio.

I think your confusing Smith and Darnell Dockett.

Smith signed his tender and turned up for workouts. Darnell Dockett is packing a sad because he isn't getting a new deal.

There were rumors that Smith was b*tching as well.

the depth behind Dockett and Smith is 36 year old journeyman Bryan Robinson

they needed a DE at some point --

this team has been bottom 10 in D for 3 out of the last 4 years (including the last two)

i have no issue with the first two picks going defense

I won't compare Dockett and Smith cause the comparison doesn't exist. Somewhere though in the recesses of my mind and even though he tendered it was reported that Tonio thought he deserved more.
