Heard this word of mouth from the radio, apparently to the Warriors for draft picks. Not sure what to think of this move...

Wow, they gave him away for nothing. I'm a bit surprised by that. I would have thought he could have fetched at least a highly protected future first.

If he would have contributed a bit, maybe. So Suns should be happy that they got TWO 2nd round picks. What a bargain...

so he wasn't a big part of team chemistry, since all claim not to mess with it, still a possible trade bait is gone, if he was at all considered what we got for him

money move....guess you're right guys

I would hope he could have got some minutes. I think him not working out with the team during the Summer really hurt him not getting any minutes. Man he was a 17th pick that sucks. Maybe it was to move cap space for the Bulls pick next year??

Suns trade seldom-used Cabarkapa to Warriors

By Craig Morgan, Tribune

The Suns solidified their 12-man roster Monday, trading second-year forward Zarko Cabarkapa to Golden State for two future second-round draft picks.
Warriors executive vice president of basketball operations Chris Mullin has long coveted Cabarkapa, an athletic big man who can run the court and shoot.

Cabarkapa was the Suns' first round pick (17th overall) in 2003 and showed promise early last season before breaking his wrist on a hard foul from Dallas' Danny Fortson on Nov. 26 that drew the ire of team chairman Jerry Colangelo, who called Fortson a thug.

Since returning Cabarkapa has looked hesitant to venture into the lane and indecisive at both ends of the floor, relegating him to the injured reserve list for much of the season.

In three appearances, he averaged three points and one rebound.

To take his place on the active roster, the team activated center Jake Voskuhl, who will be in uniform for Tuesday's game against Minnesota at the Target Center. The Suns will receive conditional 2005 second-round pick and an unconditional 2009 second-round pick from Golden State.

Ok I don't get it how can a team over the cap trade for a player with only draft picks?

Good question -- I had forgotten about that. Does Golden State have a salary cap exception from some other deal? The Dampier trade, maybe?

That could be it. Well at least they will be high 2nd round picks.

I'm not sure. The "conditional" probably means that GSW can give any team's 2nd rounder not only their own. If they would be able to acquire for instance SAS' 2nd rounder probably they could give it to us.

If it is conditional, we may not get it until 2006.

They may have done this just to save money because Zarko was not playing and they had to put him on IR where he could not play anyway.

1.3 mil this year, (1/3rd gone) and 1.4 mil next year.

If it was 2 second round picks or an outright release I'd say the Suns made a pretty good deal.

Everybody talks about how great he was playing in the game where Fortson broke his wrist. What if that was just his career game? Maybe he just doesn't have what it takes to be an NBA player. We have only seen him play sparingly but the Suns see him everyday in practice and obviously thought very little of him.

The picks have almost no value, so basically it's a salary dump. At this point, it's pretty hard to second-guess the Suns' financial moves since Sarver took over, so I don't think the trade is too remarkable either way.

Now it's time for us to look at the players the Suns passed on in order to take Cabarkapa, since he proved to be a bust so quickly. :p

He sure showed versatility and potential when he joined the Suns. I wonder if he's been shell-shocked in practice since the injury. We know that the Matrix was for quite some time after his injury.

'Sorry to see him go. He might have turned into a unique player on the Suns. It'll be curious to see what happens over the next year and a half, if Golden State gives him a chance.

We get a salary exception from this trade and may go after Malone later when it turns out we do need more experienced bigs for playoffs! :D

The vet min. is $1 million. The exception would be for $1.3 million. I don't see how that could be the motivation.

What's more curious is that the Suns now only have 12 on their roster?

Trade exceptions can be used only on in trades.

Hmm, pretty slim pickings except for Josh Howard. I guess you could say that Cook would be of some help to the Suns, given his shooting. (I was among those never sold on the reports of Cabarkapa's alleged shooting touch.)

One thing this will do is clear a little more money next season that we might spend on JJ.

My gut tells me the Suns just wanted to be in a little better posistion financially since they know JJ will hit the bank this summer.

I was against Zarko from the first time I heard about him. I was pissed when they drafted him, then ate my words after he started playing.

Of course, I don't think he will recover from Fortson. At least not while in a Suns Uni. I was just hoping he would be used as a filler in some other deal down the road.

I agree that this looks like a salary dump more than anything. I guess if Zarko was behind Lampe and Vroman on the depth chart, there wasn't much point in holding him until his contract turned into a liability, like the Nuggets did with Tskitishvili. Anyway, I hope Zarko turns things around in SF. :(

For this year, this move puts the Suns back under the cap--I guess that's worth millions of dollars if there's a luxury tax again this year. Even if they're still under a tight budget (which is how they've been acting) they could still pick up another salary.

What the Suns need is another guard--with Barbosa out, Casey Jacobsen is suddenly the only backup for three and a half positions. What guards might be available, with expiring contracts of about $1m? Pretty slim pickings, I imagine...
