It's easy to be down on the 2026 Boston Red Sox. Despite their current five-game winning streak, the 37-46 Red Sox still entered Wednesday 12 games out of first place in the American League East and 4.5 games back of the final A.L. Wild Card spot.
But that doesn't mean their playoff hopes are lost. In fact, believe it or not, their playoff chances currently are better than they were on the same date last year.
On June 30 of 2025, Boston had an 18.6% chance of making the playoffs, according to a graphic shared by X user Matthew Gross. But on Wednesday, the Red Sox held a 20.2% chance of earning a playoff berth, according to Gross.
