NEW YORK - It's been a while - exactly 569 days ago - since Yankees' ace Gerrit Cole last threw a pitch in a Yankees game that mattered.
That was Oct. 30, 2024, in Game 5 of the World Series, where things went sideways for the Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched their first of two straight championships.
Tonight at Yankee Stadium, maybe a little sooner than originally anticipated, Cole makes his long-anticipated return - starting against the first-place Tampa Bay Rays.
"I think I've watched every pitch on video of all his rehab starts,'' manager Aaron Boone said of a "successful buildup'' by Cole, following Tommy John surgery just over 14 months ago.
"I think he looks great, and I think he's ready to go.''
