Yankees named as suitor for superstar shortstop to replace George Lombard already originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees might have found their future shortstop in youngster George Lombard Jr. Lombard, who has done a lot of good during his short time in Major League Baseball, is proving that he can stick around for quite some time.
However, it's also important to remember that he's barely even played a week of Major League Baseball, and there are going to be times in which he struggles. Considering how young he is, and the history of this league, there's no chance that there aren't some bad moments for him coming up.
It's the harsh reality of playing in Major League Baseball.
Now, that might not mean the Yankees want to go out and make a move to replace him, so that's ultimately something the organization has to decide.
If they do, they were recently floated as a potential suitor for Francisco Lindor of the New York Mets, and he could be one of the few guys that makes sense to go after.
“The New York Mets find themselves in a bit of a weird spot with Francisco Lindor. On one hand, he's still a very good player (no matter what Mets fans might want to tell you), and trading him away will undoubtedly make the Mets worse in the short term. On the other hand, Lindor's contract is massive, he's likely going to steadily decline over the course of the next half-decade and his relationship with Juan Soto is a strange one at best.
“Further complicating the issue, Lindor has 10-and-5 rights, meaning he has full veto power even if the Mets wanted to trade him. If he wants to remain in New York, there's nothing they can do,” Zachary Rotman wrote.
The question with Lindor continues to be centered around his contract. Because the Yankees' payroll is already very expensive, there's a scenario in which Brian Cashman doesn't want to add a major contract to his books.
However, if the Yankees are going off strictly talent, Lindor is still one of the better shortstops in Major League Baseball and would be an upgrade over what the Yankees have had in recent years with Anthony Volpe at the position.
