Yankees can’t get tricked into pursuing elite player again this offseason, despite latest suggestion originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Over the past two to three years now, many rumors have suggested that the New York Yankees are very interested in Mason Miller of the San Diego Padres. The Padres, instead of selling at this year's deadline, like many thought, decided to buy. Frankly, there should be no problem with that for fans around Major League Baseball.

The Padres try to win and will spend money doing so. That's a good thing for this league.

However, it also raises the point that the Yankees can't keep getting tricked by the idea of potentially landing Miller.

Of course, he's as elite as it gets as a closer, but the question continues to be asked about whether he's actually available. That's why the latest linking for the Yankees is interesting, but not one I think fans should get that excited about.

“The Padres have plenty of talented players, but their roster is far from well-rounded. Their lineup has underperformed for most of the year, their rotation was so bad that Preller had to acquire two high-priced rentals just to stay afloat and their farm system, beyond catcher Ethan Salas, is a mess. Trading Miller, the best closer in the sport who is under control through 2029, might give San Diego a chance to address some of these issues,” Zachary Rotman wrote.

Rotman named the Yankees as one of the few suitors who could realistically go after Miller. There's an expectation that he could be traded within the next few years, depending on how the next couple of months go for the Padres.

Perhaps if they play poorly, A.J. Preller finally decides to move on from some of his guys. Until then, however, the Yankees shouldn't have their eyes set on the right-hander.
