Yankees get bad news from Tarik Skubal himself after latest comments about potential trade originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Around Major League Baseball, there are expected to be multiple players traded at this year's deadline who can make a major impact on multiple rosters.
One of those guys is Tarik Skubal, and the New York Yankees are expected to at least have some level of interest. Throughout their existence, the Yankees have proven that they'll do whatever it takes to ensure they have a chance to win a World Series. That includes landing star players like the left-hander from the Detroit Tigers.
However, it takes two sides to make a deal, which is why Skubal's latest comments on a potential trade make this situation all the more interesting. In fact, I'd go as far as to say that his recent comments should be considered bad news for the Yankees, as it doesn't really sound like a guy who's thinking he's going to get traded, or perhaps doesn't want to.
“We’ve been counted out before,” Skubal said, per the Detroit Free Press. “Rightfully so, we were counted out, and rightfully so, we’re counted out right now. It’s the back-against-the-wall type of thing. We’ll see who we really are and how we fight. I’ve seen it before, and that gives me a ton of confidence in this group.”
In the second half of 2024 and for most of 2025, the Tigers were among the better teams in Major League Baseball. In the first half of 2026, that hasn't been the case, but Skubal's comments about his group figuring it out are definitely fair.
The Yankees have to be hopeful he'll get traded, but comments like this definitely raise concerns about it happening.
