Cubs get bad news on potential for Tarik Skubal trade from MLB insider originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Chicago Cubs were once looking like a World Series favorite, but some major struggles have the Cubs now trying to just right the ship and avoid a further collapse.
It's very clear that the Cubs need to go out and add some talent at the MLB trade deadline, with starting pitching the top need. There are some interesting options, but none are more eye-catching than Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers.
However, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Cubs got some bad news on their chances to acquire Skubal at this year's trade deadline.
Cubs get bad news on Tarik Skubal trade
"The Cubs are in fine position for the postseason, but if they're going to make any kind of run, they badly need to acquire another impact starter," Nightengale writes. "Tarik Skubal may be too rich for their blood..."
This is not what Cubs fans will want to hear about their chances for acquiring Skubal at the MLB trade deadline.
With the Tigers collapsing and very possibly sellers by the August 3rd trade deadline, the Cubs would naturally make sense as a trade destination for Skubal.

Chicago needs more starting rotation help, and view themselves as a World Series contender. That's the perfect recipe for a team that could acquire Skubal.
But, this report from Nightengale suggests that the Cubs aren't actual contenders for Skubal. Despite the back-to-back Cy Young winner being a massive upgrade, the Cubs seemingly aren't a suitor.
Of course, they could still give up the massive price it would cost to acquire Skubal, but Nightengale's note does make it seem like more of an uphill battle for Skubal to make his way to Chicago this season.
