New York Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu certainly made his first home hit of the season count.
LeMahieu, a two-time batting champion who missed the season’s first few weeks with hip and calf problems, smacked a home run off New York Mets pitcher Griffin Canning on Saturday afternoon. Hitting eighth and manning second base, LeMahieu emphatically celebrated the opposite field solo shot that gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead.
Yankees fans on X/Twitter immediately cheered on the veteran infielder, who has battled injuries and inefficiency in recent years.
“I’m so happy for him,” one user wrote. “He needed that, not just as a player, but as a person. You can see it in the emotion.”
Added another: “LeMachine is back and I couldn’t be happier ”
LeMahieu, who turns 37 in July, added a fifth-inning single off Canning. The three-time All-Star only had nine multi-hit performances in 67 games last year.
“DJ LeMahieu is back doing DJ things — clutch hits, smooth defense, and steady leadership,” one fan commented. “The Yankees feel different when he’s in rhythm.”

LeMahieu is expected to see considerable playing time in the coming weeks. Third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera suffered a likely season-ending ankle injury against the Seattle Mariners last Monday, and second baseman Jazz Chisholm remains out with a right oblique strain.
LeMahieu hit .336 with a .922 OPS and 8.6 bWAR over his first 195 games with the Yankees from 2019-20. However, he managed a disappointing .252 average and .698 OPS in the first four seasons of a six-year, $90 million contract.
So far, so good for LeMaheiu to start 2025.
“Pulling for him to stay healthy this year and remind Yankee nation what he’s capable of,” read one post.
“A resurgence would be massive for the bombers,” another user said.
