Yankee Stadium has long had a reputation as a hitter’s ballpark, one where balls can sneak over the right field short porch for an easy home run.
New York Mets fans found themselves reminded of that reality this weekend, and they were far from pleased.
New York Yankees second baseman DJ LeMahieu, a right-handed hitter, took advantage of the short porch and mashed an opposite-field homer on Saturday afternoon. LeMahieu’s first hit of the season gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead and immediately sent Mets fans to X/Twitter.
“My dog could’ve hit a home run over that short porch,” one fan wrote.
Added another: “That short porch in Yankee Stadium is so stupid. That ball would’ve bounced off a wall [at every] other stadium or been a line out. Ridiculous.”
LeMahieu’s home run traveled 333 feet, three feet longer than home plate and the right field wall at Citi Field. The two-time batting champion finished 2-for-4 in the Yankees’ 3-2 loss.
“Your stadium should be demolished if DJ LeMahieu can hit a home run on a pop up,” read one post.

One user referenced the popular term “Little League home run,” which refers to a player taking advantage of various errors to circle the bases on an inside-the-park homer.
“We need to use that same term for THIS!” they continued. “This is a HR @yankeestadium AND NOWHERE ELSE BECAUSE the RF fence is Little League distance for [the Yankees].”
We’ll see if any Mets players follow LeMahieu in taking advantage of the short porch in Sunday’s finale.
