PHILADELPHIA, PA - JULY 11: Commissioner of Major League Baseball Robert D. Manfred announces Hunter Dietz as the 35th overall pick by the New York Yankees during the 2026 MLB Draft presented by Nippon Express at Pennsylvania Convention Center on Saturday, July 11, 2026 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Yankees are off and away with their 2026 draft class. After selecting electric left-handed starter Hunter Dietz out of Arkansas at No. 35 overall, the team decided to double up on the position in the second round, but with a twist. Instead of a college starter with proven results in an incredible conference, they hit the prep market.

British Columbia’s own Sean Duncan was selected at No. 63 overall by the Yanks out of Terry Fox Secondary School in Port Coquitlam, just outside of Vancouver.

The Canadian prospect, who turned 18 just two months ago, comes in with the added red flag of having recently undergone Tommy John surgery, which damaged his draft stock after being ranked No. 41 on Perfect Game’s Big Board, No. 66 at MLB Pipeline, and No. 67 on Baseball America.

Here’s an abridged version of the scouting report, via Baseball America:

Duncan is a projectable lefthander with high-probability starting traits built around his advanced strike-throwing. He’s the top Canadian prospect in the class and turns 18 just two months before the draft. … Duncan’s fastball sits in the low 90s and tops out around 95 mph. It’s not the most powerful heater, but it is a high-spin pitch that has swing-and-miss traits at the top of the zone. He throws high-quality secondaries to attack hitters on both sides of the plate. The list includes an upper-70s-to-low-80s slider that he can manipulate, shortening up for early strikes or expanding it with more depth as a chase pitch.

Before hurting his elbow this spring, Duncan was quickly becoming a hotshot college prospect, showcasing his solid three-pitch mix that’s headlined by a sturdy low-to-mid 90s four-seamer with a slider and curveball that project as solid secondaries. Perfect Game ranked him the No. 36 player in the entire Class of 2026, leading to a verbal commitment to SEC powerhouse Vanderbilt.

A star for the Canadian national junior baseball team, Duncan suffered the injury while with the team in the Dominican Republic, which took him out for the rest of his senior season and likely pushes any debut timeline in either college or the minor leagues until 2028.

It’s hard to project what the slot value will be here. The value for the No. 63 pick is $1.45 million, and teams will almost always go over slot value to convince high school arms to sign, but Duncan’s injury throws a curveball into all of this. It wouldn’t surprise me if he signed for less, more, or the same as the slot value. Regardless, though, you’d expect that the Yankees are willing to do what it takes to put pen to paper with a premium prospect.
