FOXBOROUGH — In its first World Cup match in 28 years, Scotland defeated Haiti 1-0 at Gillette Stadium Saturday night.
The victory came in front of a majority Scottish crowd that electrified the stadium all night.
It was Scotland’s first time winning its World Cup opener since 1982.
For Haiti, the loss marked its second-ever appearance in the tournament and first since 1974.
It was the first of seven World Cup matches that Gillette will host.

McGinn breaks the seal
In the 28th minute, John McGinn delivered the first-ever World Cup goal at Gillette Stadium, giving Scotland an early advantage.
It was the 21st goal of McGinn’s senior international career in his 88th appearance for his country.
Haiti burns early chances
Les Grenadiers were not without scoring opportunities against the Scots. In the early minutes Haiti had multiple looks on net but launched them well high in haste.
In the first half Haiti outshot Scotland eight to seven but tallied just one attempt on net.
In the second frame, Haiti threatened late with five shots in the final 20 minutes, but once more the Scottish defense stood tall.
How this impacts Group C:
Following the 1-1 draw between Brazil and Morocco earlier in the day, Scotland jumped to first place in the group with the win.
Haiti falls to the bottom of the group with the loss.

Cards:
In the 39th minute, Jean-Ricner Bellegarde picked up the first card of the match. The midfielder was shown a yellow for his tackle of Lawrence Shankland.
Almost immediately after the second half began, Scotland’s right back Aaron Hickey picked up a yellow after dragging down Ruben Providence.
In the 91st minute, Findlay Curtis picked up the second yellow for Scotland. Three minutes later, Kenny McLean picked up a third card for his side after kicking Josué Casimir in the knee.

Scotland will stay in Foxborough for its next match, facing Morocco on Friday, June 19 at 6 p.m. On the same day, Haiti will play Brazil in Philadelphia at 8:30 p.m.
