RALEIGH, NC - FEBRUARY 17: Darrion Williams #1 of the NC State Wolfpack drives past the defender during the college basketball game between the UNC Tar Heels and the NC State Wolfpack on February 17, 2026 at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, N.C. One of the fun things about basketball in the Triangle is that there are three teams that all woof at each other. The common element is that Duke and NC State historically hate UNC, while Carolina hates Duke and likes to condescend to State fans as if they’re the infamous little brother.
Take this article from KeepingItHeel.com, which mocks the Wolfpack after Darrion Williams announced he would transfer back to Texas Tech.
Like most players this past spring who assumed their eligibility was up, Williams had made other plans. He entered the NBA Draft but was not selected. When the recent court decision came down that gave all members of the class of 2022 a fifth year, Williams took advantage and returned to Lubbock, which makes sense.
Why would he have stayed with the Wolfpack? The team he was recruited to is scattered to the winds. The coach who brought him to Raleigh is gone. There isn’t anything holding him there.
The writer takes glee in what he calls an “NC State collapse,” but is it?
Look, there’s no denying that Will Wade put State in a terrible spot, but Justin Gainey should do a better job. We won’t swear by Year 1, but overall, everyone respects his coaching acumen, not least his instinct for defense. Gainey designed the defensive scheme that Rick Barnes uses at Tennessee, and it’s probably not a coincidence that the deep tournament drives the Vols have made lately came after Gainey joined the staff.
Meanwhile, UNC fans (including the writer) are ecstatic about getting a commitment from…a guy who used to play for South Dakota.
He might turn out to be great, who knows? Keep in mind, though, that Michael Malone only turned to him after things got too complicated with Florida backup center Micah Handlogten.
UNC is probably going to be better next year than NC State is, but nothing is written in stone.
All things considered, it’s generally better to woof after the fact.
