WNBPA releases strong anti-discrimination statement in response to escalating transgender athlete debate

With former NBA players like Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White declaring for the WNBA Draft, the Players’ Association has released a statement to make their own stance crystal clear.

The conversation surrounding the WNBA has unfortunately moved away from the court a little bit. The debate the league is currently embroiled in is whether trans athletes can be allowed in women’s sports.

Ex-NBA players that are out of the league like Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White have capitalised on the attention and announced their intentions to declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft.

While this is likely never going to happen, it does put pressure on the league to clarify their policies. The WNBPA, however, are free to do whatever they like, and they have now chosen to speak.

WNBPA denounce ‘hate, abuse, discrimination’ in fiery statement​

While some figures like Sophie Cunningham and Cheryl Reeve have already given their takes, the larger community of WNBA players hasn’t had much to say about the issue yet.

As their representatives, though, it seems that the WNBPA have decided this cannot go on, though. The organisation released an official statement on Friday night after Freedom’s announcement.


“The WNBPA represents 200+ individual people with different lived experiences, cultures, lifestyles and opinions. We ‌embrace justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion,” the statement says.

“Those are the values that unite this Union and allow it to protect women’s sports while creating transformational change.

“Hate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm. We will continue to have hard conversations. But we will not be used as political pawns.”

There is no escaping the fact that the current conversation has become a larger cultural issue. It now falls upon the W to decide how they will deal with all of this. The sports world will be watching.
