Overtime was required in University Park, Pennsylvania, for the No. 2 Wisconsin Badgers women's hockey team to advance to their fourth straight National Championship game.
In what felt like a true road game, Wisconsin hung in there against No. 3 Penn State. The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 2-1 lead in the first period but a strong second period for the Badgers kept them alive.
Regulation wasn't enough, as the Nittany Lions took advantage of Wisconsin's aggressiveness at 15:01 in the third period to tie the game at three. Nonetheless, the Badgers prevailed.
A boarding penalty in overtime cost Penn State big time as Wisconsin needed just eight seconds to call game. The one and only Kirsten Simms took care of business, punching Wisconsin's ticket to a fourth straight year of battling it out with No. 1 Ohio State in the National Championship game.
Laila Edwards got the scoring started for Wisconsin at 4:31 in the first period. Edwards added another goal 8:11 into the second, along with Adéla Šapovalivová, who found the back of the net at 16:09. Ava McNaughton made 22 saves on the night.
The Badgers and Buckeyes will face off on Sunday afternoon for the national title.
