Mar. 1—MADISON, Wis. — The Beavers emptied everything they had in the tank.

Trailing 2-1 in the final minute of regulation, the Bemidji State women's hockey team got a bounce. Morgan Smith took a shot that deflected off two players to tie the game. The sold-out crowd at LaBahn Arena was stunned.

Yes, that LaBahn Arena, home of the top-ranked Wisconsin Badgers, the defending national champions.

BSU bent for 61 minutes without breaking. However, 74 seconds into overtime, Laila Edwards scored the game-winning goal for UW, ending Bemidji State's season in the WCHA quarterfinals in Madison, Wisconsin.

After a goalless first period, Hailey Armstrong scored the game's first goal by capitalizing on a turnover right in front of the Badgers' net. UW tied the game a little over two minutes later on a goal from Maggie Scannell.

The final four minutes of the second period had some dramatic swings. Bemidji State believed it took a 2-1 lead on a goal from Isa Goettl, but UW successfully challenged the play for being offside.

Kirsten Simms scored 17 seconds after BSU's disallowed goal, but it was also challenged successfully by the Beavers as the Badgers entered the offensive zone offside.

The theatrics weren't done there, though, as Adéla Šapovalivová scored a power-play goal to take a 2-1 lead with 32 seconds left before the intermission.

Smith's goal forced OT for the first time between the two schools since Nov. 6, 2021. The Badgers tied the Beavers 0-0 and won the shootout as Bemidji State goaltender Hannah Hogenson stopped all 56 shots she faced at LaBahn Arena.

BSU goaltender Ava Hills did her best Hogenson impression. She made 44 saves in the loss. Ava McNaughton stopped 10 shots to extend UW's winning streak over the Beavers to 25 games.

Bemidji State finishes the season with a record of 6-27-3.
