MADISON – While the Wisconsin women’s hockey team earned its fourth straight trip to the Frozen Four on Saurday, March 14 and Kelly Gorbatenko scored her second hat trick of the season.
In other words, there was plenty of reasons to celebrate at LaBahn Arena.
The Badgers defeated Quinnipiac, 6-0, in a NCAA regional final to earn the right to continue their defense of their 2025 national championship.
Up next will be No. 3 seed Penn State in a national semifinal Friday at Pegula Ice Arena in University Park, Pennsylvania. The Nittany Lions defeated Connecticut, 3-0, in its regional final Saturday.
Wisconsin (33-4-2) dominated the ECAC champion, owning a 50-17 edge in shots on goal and never allowing the Bobcats more than eight shots in any period.
And the Badgers put them on their heels early with Gorbatenko’s first goal, which came at the 2-minute-33-second mark of the first period off passes from senior Lacey Eden and junior Cassie Hall.
UW added a goal from senior Kirsten Simms at the 17:29 mark of the first period to double that advantage, and by the time freshman Adela Sapovalivova found the back of the net during the second minute of the second period the direction of the game was clear.
In addition to Gorbatenko, UW got multi-point games from Eden (one goal, one assist), Hall (two assists) and Simms (one goal, one assist).
Gorbatenko scored her second goal at the 17:10 mark of the second period and completed the hat trick at the 17:09 mark of the final period.
She also scored four goals in a 9-2 win over St. Cloud State Feb. 21.
Check back for more on the game.
