Former Wisconsin basketball star John Tonje was traded from the Utah Jazz to the Boston Celtics before Thursday's trade deadline.
The Celtics acquired the former Badger in exchange for Chris Boucher and a second-round draft pick.
Tonje, who the Jazz selected with the 53rd overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft, is on a two-way contract. He appeared in two regular-season games for the Jazz, totaling two points and four rebounds in 14 minutes. In 32 games with the G League's Salt Lake City Stars, the former Badger averaged 30.3 minutes, 18 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists and one steal, while shooting 46.7% from the field, 37.6% from 3 and 92.8% from the free-throw line.
The former Badger now joins a Celtics team that sits third in the Eastern Conference at 33-18, just 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Detroit Pistons. Time will tell whether he spends the remainder of the 2025-26 regular season with the NBA team or whether he starts with its G League affiliate.
Tonje is looking to find a solid footing at the NBA level after an All-American season leading the Badgers in 2024-25. The Missouri transfer appeared in all 37 games, averaging 31.1 minutes, 19.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists, while shooting 46.5% from the field, 38.8% from 3 and 90.9% from the free-throw line. He came within just eight points of the program's single-season scoring record, still held by Frank Kaminsky.
