Olivia Celiscar finished second in the state in Class 4A at the shot put last season as a sophomore to Sarasota Riverview’s Susan Lowther, who has since graduated. With the district coming up in two weeks, Celiscar is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and looking to grab her first state title next month.

Celiscar won the shot put by a wide margin without it being anywhere close to her best mark on Saturday at the Polk County Track and Field Championships at George Jenkins High School. Her toss of 11.99 was well off her personal-best 12.63 but it easily beat runner-up Taylor Gibson’s mark of 10.40.

With her goal of winning a state title, Celiscar has her sights on another personal record and expects to have better throws in the upcoming postseason meets.

“I need a PR,” she said “That's what I need. I need to throw 13 meters, but it's just counties. I'm waiting for districts and regionals.”

Celiscar is the younger sister of former football standout Joshua and former basketball standout Isaac. She also played basketball as a freshman along with track and field but gave up basketball to focus on track and field last year. She has continued to work on her technique and has continued to improve.

“I’m trying to be more aggressive coming from the back of the circle because I'd be too slow coming from the back of the circle and then I pull its full strength from my arm,” she said. “So I’m trying to like use my legs because it’s the strongest part of your body.”

Celiscar knew she could be successful in the event because she’s always been strong, but she originally wasn’t going to take it as seriously as basketball. Then after she saw just how good she was doing, she had a change of heart.

“I was actually really good, so I just stuck with it,” she said.

Celiscar isn’t as strong yet in the discus but did finish second to George Jenkins Violet Smith. She said she has a love-hate relationship with the event as she struggles with the technique. Her season-best mark in the discus this year is 35.34, but she showed her potential last summer when she threw 37.7 in an AAU Regional Qualifier meet.

Winter Haven coach Ladarius Haggins said Celiscar has the potential to be equally as good in the discus as she improves her spin.

Although Celiscar gave up basketball, she continued in girls weightlifting to help her get stronger for her field events. This past season, she finished eighth and 10th in Traditional and Olympic, respectively, at the 3A-3 region meet. She finished in a five-way tie for the final four spots for state in Traditional but lost the tiebreaker.

There was a strong wind throughout the meet that affected times, but that didn’t stop George Jenkins senior Chelsi from sweeping her four events. She won the 100-meter hurdles (14.05), the 400 hurdles (1:04.73), the long jump (5.94) and triple jump (12.04).

Taylor Gibson won the javelin with a personal record of 38.41, and Smith won the discus with a PR of 38.29.

All Saints girls have best team finish

The All Saints girls track team continues to make strikes under head coach Dale Meskiman. Last year, the Saints’ ninth-place finish in his first year leading the girls track team was their best finish. With 13 runners on the team this year and competing in more events, All Saints, a tiny 1A school, finished fourth behind big schools Jenkins, Winter Haven and Auburndale.

Senior Alexandria Yoder and freshman Lindey Cook were the team’s highest individual finishers. Yoder took second in the 800 in 2:28.81 in a close finish behind Choe (2:28.00). Cook was second to Lakeland Christian’s Emma Wilkinson in the 3,200. Kelsey Cook took sixth.

Eighth-grader Alahna Hawkins was seeded 11th and finished third in the long jump.

All Saints also was second to George Jenkins in the 4x800.
