Tick tock, tick tock goes the clock when it comes to the NBA's trade deadline. The deadline will arrive this Thursday afternoon, and it is increasingly looking like the Los Angeles Lakers will end up doing nothing to improve their roster.

They could, of course, still execute a trade, especially given that general manager Rob Pelinka and the rest of the front office tend to keep their cards close to their chests. But the Lakers lack attractive, tradable assets, and there also don't appear to be a lot of attractive options for them as far as 3-and-D players.

There is another reason the Lakers may not make a move this week: They want to keep their options open for this offseason. They could have tens of millions of dollars of salary cap space, as well as two first-round draft picks and the rights to their 2026 first-rounder to offer in trades.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN said on "Get Up!" that trade talks aren't going well for the Purple and Gold and that they seem to be waiting until this summer to make any real moves.

“I don’t think so because I think you really look and read what the Lakers have actually done over the last months, they’ve been leaning towards retrofitting their team in the summer of 2026…That is when they will get access to three first-round picks to trade. Right now, they’re only permitted to trade one.”

“... The trade talks that they have had have largely been offering their expiring contracts. They haven’t been willing to include much of future draft picks or taking on future money. They are basically spinning their wheels waiting to rebuild this team around Luka Dončić.”

The Lakers are currently clinging to sixth place in the Western Conference with a 29-19 record. The free agent market could have a few interesting names, including the Denver Nuggets' Peyton Watson, who was recently linked to L.A.

But the thinking, at least for some, seems to be that L.A. is fixated on going after Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer. While a recent report said the Lakers could be a team Antetokounmpo would be interested in, it doesn't seem as if they're high on his wish list.

Right now, the Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks and possibly the Golden State Warriors are reportedly the teams most likely to land the two-time MVP.
