Dan Campbell would prefer to give the Detroit Lions’ starters at least some work during the preseason.
He is not ready to commit to it.
Campbell said the decision will depend on how the team performs throughout training camp, how much work individual players need and whether Detroit can create enough game-like intensity during practices.
“I haven’t made that decision. I would like to play them, but this thing moves as we get through these practices,” Campbell said.
Campbell has traditionally adjusted his preseason plans based on what he sees in Allen Park rather than following a rigid formula.
Veteran starters who look sharp and receive quality work during practice may not need many exhibition snaps. Younger players, new additions and position groups still trying to develop chemistry could require live game action.
“What do we look like? Who needs work? Do they need to play together? Are there players who aren’t getting enough intensity in practice, and the only way to get them there is by playing in preseason games or by going live?” Campbell said.
That approach could be especially important for Detroit’s offensive line and secondary, two groups entering camp with new combinations and health questions.
Jared Goff may not need many preseason throws. The players protecting him could benefit from working together against an unfamiliar defense.
Playing established starters always comes with risk.
One awkward tackle or collision can change an entire season before the games begin to count. Keeping everyone on the sideline carries its own danger, especially if the Lions enter Week 1 without experiencing full-speed football.
Campbell must find the balance.
“We’ll work around that stuff. Right now, I would like to play them, but we’ll see how it goes.”
Joint practices and live periods can help Detroit create intensity without exposing starters to an entire preseason game. Campbell’s comments suggest every option remains available.
